How do I give alms when I am broke

We owe more money than we have. I have about 2 dollars to my name. fridge is pretty empty. How do I give alms this lent? :confused:

(Also please pray for us, we’re struggling and we want to move out of this area. Gangs acting up, pot smokers are making my asthmatic life HELL. It’s a lot to bare.)
 
Perhaps you give some old clothes or other things you don’t use/outgrew/etc to Goodwill or a similar type of place. Perhaps you volunteer somewhere.

Sometimes the things we do to help those less fortunate than us may not be monetary.
 
Pray for those who have less than you.
There are always people who have less than the little we have.
Prayer costs you nothing but time.

God bless your soul. Your desire to give alms is already priceless in God’s eyes.

Consider religious such as members of mendicant orders, or who have made vows of poverty and own nothing. They share your spiritual sorrow in being unable to give money. But that does not prevent them from giving alms. Ask the “great cloud of witnesses”, the saints, to give alms on your behalf to the needy. Offer your poverty to Christ as your alms.

Maybe volunteer at your parish fish fry, or to babysit while someone else goes to bible study. Ask your pastor for a volunteer project that really needs someone. Yes, usually it’s the job no one wants.

Pray all 20 decades of the rosary for a special intention.
 
I can’t quote St Terese of Calcutta … But she always plugged the value of a smile.

I drive around and people have faces so grumpy … Smile at them. In the checkout line, people are plugged into phone, kids, and walking around like a zombie … Smile at them.

I like this unique idea; the value of a smile; Great ideas on this thread for giving non monetary alms.

Pray for the people you can’t help financially. Smile at someone who’s having a bad day.

Give time instead of treasure. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, visit your local prison, teach CCD, spend time at an old folks home or hospital, there are many ways to give even if we don’t have much money. And remember the widow who gave two mites, her offering was worth more than the rich men who gave many talents.

Are you able to volunteer at a soup kitchen? Or something like that. Praying for you.

Pray for yourself, family and friends. Pray for the sick and unemployed. Pray for those requesting prayerful support on a thread. I will pray for you. God loves you and may he bless you and provide all your needs.

I would pray for others. Offer up your own struggles and sufferings to the Lord, too.
