I am planning my wedding and I want place flowers before Mary during my ceremony. The problem is my priest isn’t sure about doing it because he has never performed this ritual. Can you walk us through this part of the ceremony?

After the Communion meditation, you walk to a statue of the Blessed Mother in the church, deposit flowers at the base of the statue, silently pray, walk back to the altar. That’s the basics. The parish may need to set up a small table at the base of the statue, your groom might choose to join you, you might ask someone to sing a Marian hymn, but those are common-sense practicalities that facilitate the “moment.” I should also mention that it is more fitting (not to mention cheaper) for you to sacrifice your own bridal bouquet than to commission the florist to create another for the ritual, but it’s up to you to decide whether or not you’ll give the Blessed Mother your own flowers and forgo the frivolity of tossing them to single women at the reception.

One other thing to keep in mind: This ritual is merely a pious custom. It is not a required part of the Catholic nuptial liturgy. The reason your priest may be unfamiliar with the custom is because it is not necessary for it to be included at Catholic weddings.
