I was married in the Catholic Church. My wife is divorcing me because I was diagnosed with cancer. I don’t want a divorce. I made a promise to her and to God until death do us part. I do not want to break my promise. I have stopped treatment in order to keep that promise but I am not deteriorating fast enough. What do I do so I don’t break my vows to God and her? I only know one way but it is wrong to do it.

If your wife abandons and divorces you solely because you have been diagnosed with cancer, then the fault is hers and not yours. You will not have broken your vows by allowing the divorce, you will merely have conceded that you cannot prevent her from breaking her vows. Please do not stop your treatments so that you can die rather than be divorced. God knows your heart and will not blame you for something you cannot control. I strongly urge you to contact the Pastoral Solutions Institute, a Catholic counseling apostolate, for personalized assistance. God bless.
