How do I make a good examination of conscience?

I haven’t been to confession for a year. How do I make a good examination of conscience? I have been Catholic all my life but confession has been stumbling block for me. I want to develop better habits and receive this sacrament more often, but never feel I have made a “good” confession.
 
It’s better to just go to confession and do your best than to scruple so much over making a “good” confession that you avoid going to confession entirely. See the booklet below for help in preparing and then open your confession by saying, “Father, forgive me for I have sinned. It’s been one year since my last confession. Please help me to make a good confession.”
