How do I not grieve?

I’m so sorry you’ve lost your best buddy. The near term painful memories will be short, but the long term joyful memories will last forever.

I’m so sorry. I know how it feels.
We had to put my beloved border collie to sleep due to increasing pain. As the vet placed the final injection, my phone alarm rang; the message was "Divine mercy,’ a reminder that it was 3;00 on Friday. I had forgotten that.
I’m sure it was Our Lord reminding me that Shadow was in good hands.

I’m so, so sorry Kathleen. My prayers are with you. Abbott is likely playfully bounding around in Heaven and awaiting the day when he’ll see you again. I was reminded by someone when our dog passed away that they are merely on loan to us by God - as is everyone and everything on this planet. I think I was meant to hear that, and perhaps you are, too. Please take care, my dear.

I think I read something somewhere that an Anglican Bishop(?) reminded us that it was not the animals who were kicked out of paradise.

What an excellent thought by whomever it was! I never quite looked at it that way, Kathleen, but it’s a potent truth. In reading a lot of accounts of near-death experiences through the years, I’m very encouraged that many people have been joyfully greeted as they were passing over into the next life by their beloved pets who had previously died. Our Lord’s peace to you always.
