My father is close to death and will likely be dying a few thousand miles away from my deceased mother and their grave. Distance, cost, and organizational efficiency call for a direct burial followed by a memorial Mass. Tradition calls for a funeral. In terms of religious impact is there any real difference for my dad of these two options? If we did a memorial Mass in the burial location, what can we do to let those pay their respects where he dies?

I am so sorry and will keep your father, you, and your family in prayer. I hope that readers will do so also.

If necessity requires it, your father’s remains can be buried immediately in the location where he passes on, and you may have a funeral Mass for him in your location. The remains need not be present for a funeral Mass to be celebrated; all that you need have present is some symbol of your father, such as a photograph. You may also arrange for memorial Masses to be said in the months to come for the repose of your father’s soul.

God bless.
