How do I politely react when I can't understand priest's accent?

How does one politely react when you can’t understand a priest’s accent?
We recently got a new priest from Nigeria and he has a thick accent that is very hard to understand. How should I react when he asks me something(such as during Confession) and I honestly don’t know what to say. I don;'t want to offend him in any way by saying I didn’t understand him. Do I just let him think that maybe I don’t hear well?
Any advice?

Telling him the truth is not impolite–nor is it uncharitable. He needs to know that further English lessons are necessary. If enough people tell him that they cannot understand him, perhaps he will get a clue.
