Jehovah Witnesses claim Jesus did not die on the Cross but a
Pole. How can I prove Christ died on the Cross using scripture?

Is it that importatnt to you whether Jesus was nailed to an upright post with no “cross bar” attached to it? He was crucified…nails driven through his hands and feet…he suffered…and died…is it an issue of your faith that his hands were not nailed over his head rather than stretched out on a cross bar on an upright pole?

My faith is that he was crucified. I’m asking what scriptures I can use to show he was crucified 🙂

Mark 15:24 .“and they crucified him”. Crucifixtion wasn’t necessarily on a “cross”…sometimes it was on an “X”…other times a “T”…and other various ways…some nailed to trees…the gospels say he was crucified…they do not provide a detailed description of what the “torture stake” looked like…

Matthew 27:37: "And they placed over his head the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews."

If Jesus was nailed to an upright post with hands above his head, as in the impaling stake of the JWs false belief, it would seem to me that the ‘written charge’ would be placed above his nailed hands.

Of course, the Watchtower society will claim that Matthew was writing figuratively when he penned ‘over his head,’ as the sky is certainly above my head even when I hold my hands up in the air. There is no end to their machinations.

The charge written against hm didn’t necessarily have to be placed above his hands…it could have been placed above his head…even if his hands were nailed above his head…scripture does not give a detailed account of how he was crucified.

In “Ben Hur”…he was crucified on a “T”…and a sign with it’s own “post” nailed over his head…again my question…does it matter according to your faith requirements?

A difference that makes no difference is no difference…he was crucified…he suffered…he died…why is it important that he was nailed to a “cross t” figure? He would have died and suffered just as surely on a “torture stake” as on an upright with a cross bar.🤷

Luke 23:26

26 As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.

The word crucify comes from the Latin word for “cross.” That would include an X or T or classic cross shape. However, in practice the execution would have been carried out on whatever was available. Like others have pointed out, the shape of the execution instrument is not the key to our faith. On the other hand, there is evidence of the cross being a Christian symbol since the first century.

I would just concede the point with your Witness friend and continue to share God’s love and the more essential points such as Christ’s divinity and His Resurrection. It’s like debating blood transfusions or voting: if you don’t want a blood transfusion or want to vote, fine; your eternal salvation does not depend on either of those.

This the reference I thought of first to prove Jesus’ death on the cross as well as the Latin meaning of “crucifixion:”

From: christianity.about.com/od/goodfriday/p/crucifixionhub.htm
The word crucifixion comes from the latin “crucifixio,” or “crucifixus,” meaning “fixed to a cross.”

  1. It really doesn’t matter
  2. Simon carried “something”, whether it was the stake, the crossbar, or the cross. Whatever he was carrying, he carried it to a place of execution. Wouldn’t you think they’d have the stakes set up already there?
  3. John 20:25: “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” Nails is plural. If Jesus’s hands were above him, would they not use one nail through both?
  4. There are many references in the works of the church fathers that state the shape explicitly or implicitly, so we know it was a common belief relatively early on.
5)Why is the burden of proof on you? The JWs came to this argument because they thought that “stauros” meant ONLY stake at Jesus’s time, which has shown to be false. There are contemporary references to people being executed on crosses.

Interesting

Remember that we Catholics base our beliefs on the WORD of God which can come from both the Bible and apostolic tradition (e.g. what the early Church took witness to). For some time there was not NT yet the Church survived because God’s WORD was spoken by the disciples and the Church.

Actually you now have a loophole to this argument. “That’s just artists’ portrayals, Jesus could very well have been nailed to the stake with two nails in His hands” or whatever. 😉

Well, they would argue that stauros was mistranslated in this case (and just about any other case). And this is how they render it:

Now as they led him away, they laid hold of Simon, a certain native of Cy·re´ne, coming from the country, and they placed the torture stake upon him to bear it behind Jesus.

Correct. Let’s be honest here: when we say ‘cross’ we now often think of the Latin cross (✝️), but that’s just one possible form the crux could take.

I got a better one maybe;)…ask the J/W why it’s so important to him/her?

Jesus was most likely crucified on a “cross” as stated in gospel.

I think there’s some confusion here. No one disputes that Jesus was executed by being hung on a stauros. Rather, the question is: should the Greek word stauros be understood as a ‘cross’ or as a simple upright ‘stake’?
