I wonder how one could prove time exists? Or is it a man made invention?

Well, if you think about it it really does seem to be totally man made. On earth a day is 24 hours, but if we were on another planet it would be different. Also, if we lived in outer space there would be no days because there’s no sun, and thus, no hours either. In our perception, only the present really exists. We can guess what might happen and recall what happened, but neither exist anymore for us. However, nothing is impossible for God, so He has access to all the states that existed, exist, and will exist.

I dunno, that’s what I got lol

I agree with you - seems like “time” is a method for humans to keep order. God doesn’t need “time”. Everything is “now” for God. When i get to Heaven, I will ask Him, but - my Grandma told me He might tell me its none of my business! Ha!

Look up velocity to start with. Time as a function in velocity.

We prove mathematically that time exists and time effects other functions and events. Ie the speed of light and sound.
Velocity , acceleration, direction, position etc.

totally man made. On earth a day is 24 hours…
Melodeonist, you are talking about the measure of time, which man has made incredibly complicated and arbitrary. Consider, for example, that weeks do not align regularly with months or years. Look at time zones and daylight saving time. Look at how we name the months of the year. I could go on…

I think the OP is asking about time as a variable associated with change such as motion, or time as we experience it subjectively.

To the OP: Discussions of this nature appear often in the Philosophy forum. I am not sure how productive those discussions were in the past, or how helpful they would be for you, but take a look around.

When the sun is overhead, it’s Lunchtime. That’s proof time exists!

You can prove time exist by escaping earth’s gravity well. Our gps devices has been doing that for years now. When you are outside earth’s gravity, time speeds up. On Earth, time slows down.

Time as we consider it is man-made for the purpose of structure, order and comparison (Seconds, minutes, hours, weeks and calendar months).
Time itself is the measure of the rate of change of instances. It is true that the Ancient Greeks were in the past and that the Future Martians, for example, would be in the future.

Days, Lunar months, and years, though very dependent on location in the universe relative to other things, are genuine measurements of time as they are based on things which are physically measurable, rather than being arbitrary divisions of other arbitrary divisions (like seconds and minutes are).

If time did not exist, things would not move so then nothing would happen. The Sun wouldn’t rise as the Earth wouldn’t rotate; air would not move; life would not exist; your question could have been neither asked nor answered.

You could try using reductio ad absurdum similar to what I’ve written just above.

I believe it depends a bit depending if you know calculus. But basically speaking speed is distance divided by time. Ie 30 feet in 5 seconds. The speed is 6 feet per second. Or in science lingo 6ft/sec. So time is a fundamental component. Velocity is similar except that instead of just speed, velocity also includes a direction.. Ie 6ft/sec southwest. So both components are needed. So In short, in sciene, time is principal which is provable (as much as we can prove things). As a faith person I’ve heard that God is outside time, which if you start thinking about it can hurt your head a bit. But I don’t think miracles are predictable by science either lol.

It is an abstract conception invented by the mind of man. Even our Creator was not bound by a Timex. All things were referred to as in the “fulness of time” but the numbers or concept have never really been defined in a scientific way. So time is a matrix we live within. Good luck in your quest in finding a proveable equation.

Time is needed to keep things movin along.

On the one hand, there are mathematical and physics proofs for the concept of time. I don’t know what they are, but other people do, and books have been written about it.

On a slightly less serious note, sometimes people like to sit around over several cups of coffee or several glasses of wine and discuss life the universe and everything and do thought experiments about “is reality real”, " is time real", “how can we know”.

Which is fun and all.

But for real world application, just try failing at something that is time-sensitive, like not filing your taxes by April 15, and you will quickly discover how real the concept of time is 🙂
