How do I refute the argument that Jeremiah 10:2-4 prohibits Christmas trees?

I wrote an article about this, six years ago, Jeremiah, Christmas Trees, and the King James Bible:

“Believe it or not, this needs to be said: The prophet Jeremiah wrote nothing about Christmas trees… It needs to be said because fundamentalists read the King James Bible and, in many cases, completely misunderstand what they read… Jeremiah was writing about the nothingness of the pagan idols: they are made from wood that’s plated with precious metals or adorned with jewelry. They are not gods, they can do nothing good or evil: they can’t even move of their own accord! So useless are they, they need to be fastened down so they won’t fall over. Don’t have anything to do with them!”

The evergreen tree is a symbol of eternal life. The star at the top is Jesus. The lights on the tree underneath the star are the Saints who follow Christ to heaven. All enjoy life evergreen. That’s what I see in a Christmas tree. Symbols are like words. They are transitory. The concepts they symbolize are not. The evergreen tree is conceptualized by Christians as a symbol attached to Jesus’ birthday. Whatever pagans may have conceived in the past has no meaning for Christians. Pagan myth has a measure of truth. Pagan symbols can be sanctified if they can be pointed at Christ. If Truth is their true object.
