I’m 15 and I guess im at the age of lust. I look at girls in bad ways and I read the bible yesterday and I read the verse Mattew 5:28 “But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” I feel guilty. I never watched porn or masterbated. I’m a really curious person and I sometimes wonder how it feels but I don’t do it. My problem is just staring at girls in lust. I’m praying the rosary everyday and reading bible to gain some wisdom.😃

Honestly, you can’t really stop lust. You must always fight it though. And if you’re not giving in to the sin of masturbation and porn, I’d say you’re doing pretty good. But, just don’t let that be enough. It’s always a fight. A good fight. THE good fight. I’m praying for you brother. Fight on!

Keep praying your rosary, and always ask the Lord and our Blessed Mother for help when you feel tempted. My priest said that sometimes we cannot help the feelings that hit us, but we can help how we respond to them. If you find yourself looking at a girl in a lustful way, say a quick prayer and focus your attention elsewhere! 😉

Lust, in its proper context, is perfectly healthy and natural. There is nothing wrong with you feeling sexually attracted to other people - it’s only if you act on these feelings without consideration for others, or for your own health, that they become problematic.

As with anything else in life, managing lustful feelings and thoughts is a matter of balance. You certainly won’t help yourself by obsessing about every instance of lust you experience and blaming yourself for what is a perfectly normal response to circumstances. Accept that it is just a sign your body is behaving as it should, and you will soon find that it is something you can happily keep in the background until you’re in a situation where it’s appropriate to indulge it.

Lust is one of the seven deadly sins for a reason, odds are that girl will be a mother or a nun one day, if you imagine your mother you can already see the problem with lust and how you would not want your friends to think of your own mother that way. It also takes jabs at your own soul slowly beating you down until you start to fall where the sanctifying grace of confession now saves your fall. As far as stopping it close your eyes or look away say a hail mary and go to frequent confession. Also, go to the bathroom if it gets real bad for some reason, but it shouldn’t if you’re doing a good job.

Im 35.
I’m married.
I still struggle with these issues. This is one of the most universal areas of temptation.

A point to remember is this:
Temptation and sin are two different things.

Your thoughts only become a sin when you deliberately choose to revel in them. this requires 2 things:
  1. the knowlegde that the action or thought is sinfull
  2. deliberate, free choice of the will to engage in the act.
If you have not chosen to entertain and follow the thought it is a temptation not a sin.
If on the other hand you feel tempted, and freely choose to dwell on the thought and explore it in your mind taking enjoyment from the process than yes this is the sin as Jesus describes (at your age it is Fornication not Adultery unless the object of your fantasies is married… but that’s little more than nit-picking.)

St. Francis de Sales in his book "The introduction to the devout life describes this exact point in an analogy of a married lady being approached by suitors.

It is not sin for her if she is propositioned

If she enjoys the proposition and entertains the suitor she is entering the “Near occasion of sin” which in itself may or may not be a minor (venial) sin. particularly depending on the situation (public or private, is she leading him on or merely being polite in an appropriate or necessary way etc.)

If she revels in the attention and seeks it out, leading such suitors on then she is most certainly being adulterous even before she brings a suitor to her bedroom.

St Francis says that the same applies to our thoughts.

If we reject such a thought as soon as it enters our mind we have committed no sin.
If we let these thoughts in and examine them we may be entering the near occasion of sin. - but even that may not be immediately sinfull
If we revel in the thoughts. Look at the girls and women around us in their summer clothes and choose to “undress them with our eyes” or think about how good it would feel to do so physically. If we consider them not as people to serve and Love (by love think more how a parent loves their child - by service and devotion, expecting nothing in return) - but rather look at them as someone who would be able to serve me by fulfilling my sexual or other desires.
This thought process is sinfull. It comes between you and God. It comes between you and the ability to form proper loving relationships with Gods People around you.

On another note: depending on your place on your own spiritual journey - it may be appropriate to use some form of mortification at times of temptation. - however this must be discussed with a spiritual director or confessor first.

When I was your age I asked the Lord to help me to Love all his children equally.

He helped me to see the inner beauty of the girls and boys around me. this really helped to get past the purely visual attraction, and appreciate them for their whole person, not just their sexual appearance.

Remember that every girl you meet is a Princess. An Heiress to Christ’s throne. Many of those who are christians have accepted this calling. the others do not know it but are equally called to that inheritance. You are a prince - an heir to that same throne. If you would marry a princess you should act like a prince with chivilary and manners to all those around you. - not just when you feel like it.

Chastity is a virtue. It is a Gift the Lord will grant you if you ask him for it. Pray for it every day. every time you pray, and every time you are tempted.

Approaching the world by reveling in the near occasion of sin, and seeing how far you can go without taking your trousers off is not chastity. It can cause damage that you wont realise until you have married. -
Living with a chaste mindset now will help you to develop your sexuality as you grow into a man so you will become a man in control of his sexuality and will have the choice of marriage or celibacy - however the Lord calls you.

It depends exactly what you mean by “lust”.

If by lust you mean the natural sexual attraction that a healthy young man may have for women, there is nothing inherently wrong with it. It’s part of God’s design to lead men towards marriage, if that’s their vocational calling.

If by lust you mean the conscious choice to allow yourself to objectify women and indulge in sexual thoughts about them, then this is wrong and needs to be tackled as it arises. The initial thoughts themselves are temptations and not in themselves sinful…it is when we consent to them and dwell on them that we engage in sin.

Of course, one (the initial attrcation and thoughts) can easily lead into the other (inordinate desire and objectification), and that’s where the “good fight” (as buzzoff1031 so aptly put it) should be taken up.

As others have noted, if you are not giving in to porn and masturbation, you’re doing very well. Keep praying and when these thoughts come…firstly, relax…accept that they are natural…but don’t consent to dwell on them…move your thoughts onto other things, such as prayer. Distract yourself with worthy things.

I like anruari post above too. Good advice in there.

The biggest realization that helped me the most was that, I personally CANNOT stop lust. God helps thwart lust. As in all things, you must discover that no good deed nor any rejection of sin is from you, but from God.
That is not to say, of course, that sitting back and hoping for the best without effort is the course of action to take. But, for me at least, all the prayers and distractions in the world didn’t help until I accepted that it wasn’t about ME beating lust, it was about cooperating with God’s actions through me.

I agree with the above posts; you simply cannot stop the temptation of Lust and, you cannot fight it alone.

Prayer, prayer, prayer, and cold showers when necessary. It takes time, patience and “training” to attempt to see those of the opposite sex as beautiful in a way that God intended and not as for our own personal sex objects.

It’s a lifelong struggle for some; some more than others.

A priest once told me when I see a girl or woman and start to have “those thoughts” to simply thank God for the beauty he made for all of to appreciate. It seems to work. 🙂
