How do I stop sinning when I'm sleepy?

I have found that I am most vulnerable to certain sins (impure thoughts/actions, sloth) when I am waking up in the morning, in that groggy state between sleep and full alertness. Is my culpability lessened given the circumstances? And, furthermore, what measures can I take to guard myself against sinning when I myself am seemingly not entirely in control of all my faculties?

If you are not in control of your faculties, you do not sin. Sin requires sufficient knowledge and deliberate consent. If you would like to do more to avoid those circumstances in which you have such thoughts and temptations, even if they do not actually constitute sin, then when you wake up, get up. Do not stay in bed. Start your morning routine. In other words, do what you need to do to exit the groggy state as quickly as possible. If this happens in the middle of the night and you do need to remain in bed, then pray as you fall back asleep. Formal prayers (e.g., Hail Mary, Divine Mercy prayers) usually work well at such a time and their rhythm may even help you get back to sleep more quickly. If you want a saintly intercessor for this need, try Bl. John Paul II, who told George Weigel in Witness to Hope that he had difficulty getting up first thing in the morning.
