How do I tell my ultra-secular parents I want to be a priest?

I suppose I’m well-off in this area- both my parents already anticipate that I want to be a priest.

I suppose you all need prayers, now:signofcross:

Awesome for you! I am always happy to hear that there are families that are supportive and young men that are pursuing this.👍

Part of me hopes my son will be called to a religious life (as I sometimes feel that I was very close to this path at one time). maybe my daughter too but I know if they both are called my wife my start up with her wanting grand kids thing…

But I’m the third of five sons in my family, it’d be a bit easier for them than for others.

Wow - Matthew, I think it is amazing that you are such a devout Catholic. God is definitely calling you if you hear his voice amidst the chaos of your life and despite having no support for even attending Mass. I will be praying for you, and to answer your question – I think you just tell them, but get the support of your priest first so you have a strong arm to fall back on if they try to tell you it is ridiculous. Keep listening - God is very clearly speaking to you!

I’m in the same boat as you, Pious Mat, except my parents are Protestant, my father being an Ex-Catholic. My mother is extremely opposed because she wants grandchildren. She’s told me a few times that she was ashamed of me and even pushed me to move out of the house (I’m a senior in High School). She forgets that she still has a daughter too.

I’m interested in the FSSP also, but my parish priest will hardly listen to me when I talk about having a vocation. He told me to go to college first and seems to belittle the fact that I believe I really have a vocation.

Pious Mat, we should start some sort of support group for prospective seminarians! You are surely in my prayers.

Pace e Bene
Andrew
