This afternoon, two gentlemen who are Jehovah’s Witnesses showed up at my door. This is not the first time. They have made other visits in the past. They are courteous and cordial, not pushy. As a practicing Catholic, how can I tell them, in a gentle way, that my wife and I are not interested? I remember, when growing up, my mom would have us politely take the literature they presented and, as soon as the door closed, it ended up in the recycle bin.

Your mother’s method is very good and ensures that the literature is not read by impressionable souls. However, it also encourages return visits. Since these JWs keep coming back, it sounds like you’ll need to move from “gentle” to “firm.” The next time they show up, say flatly, “No, thank you, we’re not interested,” and immediately close the door.
