How does the Orthodox Churches Bishops come together and speak out to the world and all Christians against the immorality in today’s world?

Have they made joint statements on abortiion, invertilization, the sexual immorality of today’s world and the decline of the family. How is the Orthodox Church relevent in the modern world?

While the Pope is greatly critized for his stand on some of the above issues, he does speak out. I was just wondering how the Orthodox Churches speak to these issues. Is there a coming together in a council or synod where these things are discussed?

Through Synods and Conferences, through Patriarchs, through local Archbishops and Bishops and through Priests.

Orthodoxy is relevent today because it continues to bring the same message of Faith, Hope and Love by the practice of the living Theology through a consistent life of Deep Prayer that it has since the very beginning of the Church.

Just because they don’t speak out in America so much doesn’t mean they don’t take stands in other countries. Remember there’s no pope: there’s many patriarchs.

There’s also many less Orthodox than Catholics, especially in America. Since America is a quarter Catholic, we have a much stronger voice here, and of course the media covering us and putting their own little twist on it.

The Orthodox Church has quite a say in Eastern European countries, Russia especially!🙂

Do all Orthodox Bishops agree with these statements? Or are these sites opinions only representing the Greek Orthodox.

I couldn’t open the first link.

I appreciate your response.

scoba.us/news/official-statements.html The statements made here are joint statements made by all Orthodox Jurisdictions in the Americas that have chosen to be a member of SCOBA: Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas.

The other links I provided above are from specifically the Greek Orthodox Church.

I am curious as to why you seem to be holding a double standard - why should the Orthodox Patriarchs or Archbishops make only joint statements, when you seem to accept statements from just 1 of the Catholic Patriarchs, the Bishop of Rome - if you want “joint statements” from Orthodox why not then only read or listen to joint statements by all Catholic Patriarchs.

In fact, have any of the other Catholic Patriarchs, like the Melkite Greek Patriarch and others made joint statements with the Patriarch/Pope of Rome on these same issues you are inquiring about?

Just to clarify for readers not familiar with Scoba, pretty much every canonical juristiction, with the exception of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, and the Ukranian Orthodox Church of Canada, are represented on Scuba, and both of the above churches are branches of other Churches which are represented.

So essentially Scoba can speak for all Orthodox in North America.

All of the orthodox patriarchs are busy preaching to their people. It’s not their fault CNN only covers the Pope so you haven’t heard their statements.

That too. There are a lot fewer Eastern Christians in the markets of any English news source, while there are a lot of Catholics, and there are a lot of interested Protestants.

I was not holding a double standard. The Pope speaks in conjuction with all the Bishops of the Church. I don’t know where you got this impression. I was curious about how the Orthodox as a body makes decisions about their faith in the modern world.

I was asking because a Metropolitan (I believe that was his title) who is located in Texas I believe, was very much against the Patriarch of Greece. he seemed to be stating that the Greek Patriarch wanted to be over him). I saw a video of him speaking against that Patriarch. The Metropolitan is over the Western Rite Orthodox in America from what I understood watching the video. I just recall him saying we are Americans!. It seemed that he was putting his being American over being Orthodox.

Do you happen to have a link to the video? I was just wondering because this could be about the leaders of the Greek Old-Calendarists as they have some western rite parishes in the US and have some videos online too. Just curious.

I don’t know what to tell you, because I don’t know anything about “Western Orthodox”. To learn about them, I just started a link asking about who they are? What Patriarch, if any, they are under? And if they are canonical.

Maybe we’ll learn more about it together 🙂

I am sorry, I was just surfing the web and came upon it on one of the many sites I go on.

The Metropolitan was all American and actually didn’t appear to be the brightest person I have ever heard. I think that Americans have such a Westernized culture that just as we see the Anglicans who approached Rome now are backing down as their demands might not be met by Rome, it appears that some of the Westernized Rites are having problems with authority.

I have attended an Antiochian Western Rite liturgy once. They were from the Episcopal church that I attended and when we broke away from TEC, they went Orthodox. They use the 1928 BCP with a few adaptations of the Orthodox, at least they did then and that was many years ago.

I have been in a Greek Orthodox Cathedral and it was really beautiful. When I went to this church, it just didn’t have the same effect on me. I am sure that the Greek and other Orthodox liturgies are much more beautiful.

If I run across the video I will try to remember to let you know.

From what I can see there is a Western Rite Vicarate under the Patriarch of Antioch headed by a Metropolitan who seems to be based in Texas, which would be over the vast majority of Western Rite parishes in North America (Since the vast majority are under Antioch). He is quite free to have a personal opinion of the Patriarch of Constantinople, and although he is in communion with him he not under him. Sadly there are many Orthodox who do see a somewhat monarchistic streak in the Patriarchite of Constantinople. This is unfortunate but it does not undermine the Communion.

I accidently posted the link from Google on another thread. Here it is:

Pan Orthodox Sermon by His Beatitude Metropolitan Jonah. He is residing in Dallas, Texas.

Since I am not familiar with Orthodoxy I have no idea what seems to be his disagreement is.

I think I know what you’re talking about. His Beatitude was speaking in April about the uncanonical situation in America with overlapping jurisdictions. He was basically telling the Mother Churches that there is no “diaspora” and that they should let the Church in America be.

In Christ,

Yes, Metropolitan Jonah is head of the Orthodox Church in America aka the OCA (I don’t know how much you know about Orthodoxy but the OCA is just one of the many jurisdictions that we have in America). The OCA only has the eastern rite and it has roots in the Russian tradition as it was formed from the Russians. Metropolitan Jonah is a convert to Orthodoxy and he was previously an Episcopalian. I remember hearing in the past how he said some things against the Ecumenical Patriarch because the EP was saying what had to be done to fix Orthodoxy in America. I forget what exactly the EP said but I remember it was frowned upon by many Orthodox (I think the EP may have said some negative things about the OCA but I’m not 100% positive) and it angered Metropolitan Jonah. But Metropolitan Jonah apologized for his harsh words and talked in a nice way about the jurisdictional problem in America.

This was all coming from my memory but I’m pretty sure I have it right. It seems that many Orthodox tend to think fondly of Metropolitan Jonah, at least from the Orthodox that I talk to (which is almost all converts to Orthodoxy).

To be honest I think at times the OCA is a little bit phobic of the EP, which doesn’t help our pan-Orthodox struggles.

How does the Orthodox Churches Bishops come together and speak out to the world and all Christians against the immorality in today’s world?
Generally, speaking, they don’t. We are usually content to leave such matter to the authority of individual bishops.
Have they made joint statements on abortiion, invertilization, the sexual immorality of today’s world and the decline of the family.
There has been no council considered universal by anyone (in EOy) since 1341. So no.
How is the Orthodox Church relevent in the modern world?
By teaching the Apostolic faith and administering the redemption that accompanies it. You actually think that the EOC has gone by centuries with its ancient form of addressing people and that being sufficient and now all of a sudden the 21st century is a whole different thing?
I was just wondering how the Orthodox Churches speak to these issues. Is there a coming together in a council or synod where these things are discussed?
Well, now that you phrase it that way there are local synods that can and do make statements on issues like this. But we have no immediate form of ecumenical representation like you do in the Roman communion.

They don’t represent all the Greek Orthodox.

They only represent the U.S. archdiocese of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
