I dont get it…Do some Evangelical groups really not believe in Satan? How do Protestants, Baptists and others feel about the devil and exorcism?

I mean from what i read: Lutherans more or less just preach to the demon until the demon gets bored and leaves, Angelicans have a swat team of exorcists ready to act for “psychological reasons” and Pentecostalists make it up as they go along (no structure to an exorcism).

so what does that mean. they all call a Catholic of Methodist if **** hits the fan? (excuse my language)

From the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod website:
Demonic Possession
Q. Does the LCMS hold an official position as to the existence of demonic possession? Does the LCMS retain the Rite of Exorcism as practiced in the Roman and Eastern Orthodox churches? Does the LCMS have special clergy assigned to this task?
A. The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod certainly believes in the existence of Satan and of demonic beings, and individual LCMS pastors have participated from time to time in rites of exorcism. The LCMS has no “official position” on “demonic possession,” however, nor does it subscribe officially to any formal rite of exorcism or have “special clergy assigned to this task.”

If I’m not mistaken our Roman Catholic Church assigned exorcisms to what was called a minor order and I believe that they no longer exist inn that context. For the Church to perform a valid exorcism some real heavy duty criteria must be met and in my 50 years I have never heard of a valid exorcism being performed, though I may very well be wrong. Today the rite of exorcism can only be performed by a priest under the authority of the bishop and that just is not going to happen…

See CCC 1673 😉

Well, my brother-in-law yesterday was debating me on exorcisms and he said that the demons have to be prayed out of the individual. I told him that the exorcism a Catholic priest performs is basically a prayer. He thought that we believed holy water can cast out devils by itself.

Why would it not happen? Have you read the book “The Rite: The Making of the Modern Exorcist”? Or books, articles and interviews by Gabriele Amorth, an exorcist in Rome? Exorcism still happens in the Catholic Church. It just isn’t always like “The Exorcist” movie.

They talk about it in their sermons but when **** hits the fan, they roll over and go back to sleep. I was in a family of pentecostal pastors… from feeding the hungry and clothing the naked to exorcising the demon posessed, it was preached about, but not followed through.

We had a demon-posessed man in our living room once, when I was very involved in street ministry. For some odd reason we thought we should call the pastor. HAHA, according to the pentecostal tradition, we are all “pastors” and should all be doing our own exorcisms. Praise God, more than twenty yrs later, all the Christians who witnessed that … manifestation of demons… are all still following after Christ today… but what we all witnessed that night, was that when we (young adults) called our pastor, he “pooh-poohed” us and didn’t come over. He thought the guy could just be calmed down. We had no wisdom or knowledge in doing our own exorcisms! Over the next yr, the pastor invited the man to be a part of our worship services. In time, this person ended up raping more than one young lady at the church before being imprisoned.

 Yikes! How did you know that the guy was demon possessed?

I don’t want to go into detail, as it was pretty ugly, but the weird voices and primarily what the voices said was the tip-off. The other Christians who were there were in agreement. It’s hard to say, looking back, how much was drug or alcohol related and how much was obvious mental illness, but it was our opinion that it was definitely demonic. I really don’t ever bring this up and it was over 20 yrs ago. Just thought it addressed the OP’s question about pentecostals.

How do I feel about the Devil? The devil surely exists, he is crafty, and he is deadly serious about harming us. I have seen with my own eyes demon possessed people and the manifestation of demons. We put on the armor of God and ask for His intercession to cast out the demon. Every possession is different, yet the devil has no new tricks. It is a terrible process.

Not one person, group of people, or denomination has the corner market on casting out demons. Demons can only be cast out by the authority of Jesus. To think otherwise is very dangerous.

Personally, I would never let someone cast out a demon without an experienced person to lead the direction of prayer to protect all involved.

Father, I pray for this particular thread, that only the truth be spoken and interpreted. Protect the eyes, ears, minds, and hearts of all those who read the words contained here and contribute to this discussion.

What do you mean by that? “Personally.” Are you a pastor? How do you go about finding someone “experienced?”

Let me phrase that in a less personal way. According to your religious tradition, if you knew of a demonic situation, where do you find this experienced person?

Well as part of my church and the knowledge of the clergy and the people who attend my church (across this country and in South America) I know the folks that have dealt with this type situation before, both pastor’s and lay persons. I am not a pastor, but I have done missions both here and in South America and I have quite a few years of experience with assisting and leading in these situations. I am usually one of the people who is sought out in this area to help in such situations and it’s never done alone.

It’s not something that happens every day.

Mainline protestant denominations more or less play down the concept of demon possession. You kind of exagerate how different denominations handle this (kind of funny, actually), but it’s kind of true too.

Lutherans historically believe that one reads Scripture to the possessed in order to free the person.

Anglicans have subsituted psychiatry for any sort of an understanding of possession. Episcopalians and Methodists do the same, from what I understand.

Baptists and Pentecostals usually yell at the demon and invoke Jesus and the Holy Spirit to leave the body of the possessed.

Only the Catholic and eastern orthodox churches subscribe to a specific ritual when dealing with possession.

Orthodox Christian Priests exercise infants and converts immediately before Baptism. By the Rite of Exorcism.

I truly wish you all would speak with a priest and ask him what he thinks…

God bless all of you and Merry Christmas!! 👍

Its not that complicated for a Christian bathed in the blood of Jesus and with God on his side, get two or three (or more) Saints together and pour on the possessed the wrath of God. Until the demon or devil gets out and cast back into Hell.

I do believe very strongly as a Christian these gifts tend to favor certain people but not clergy, we are all clergy to God but all the faithful can take part. But its like all the Gifts of the Spirit each gets the measure of authority as God considers it wise.
