Is this something you just stumble upon or do you have to make an effort for it to happen? Exorcist moves scare the life out of me. Does watching them mean demons will come for me or something? I feel like even learning or curiosity about demonic possessions will lead to them.

The devil made me do it, is quite a common excuse, but…from Wiki:

Several of the obsessions and possessions noted in the New Testament were simple maladies, or fantastic fancies, which made it believed that such persons were possessed by the devil. The ignorance of the people maintained this prejudice, and their being totally unacquainted with physicians and medicine served to strengthen such ideas.

Demonic possession is not a valid psychiatric or medical diagnosis recognized by either the DSM-5 or the ICD-10. Those who profess a belief in demonic possession have sometimes ascribed to possession the symptoms associated with physical or mental illnesses, such as hysteria, mania, psychosis, Tourette’s syndrome, epilepsy, schizophrenia, conversion disorder or dissociative identity disorder.

Additionally, there is a form of monomania called demonomania or demonopathy in which the patient believes that he or she is possessed by one or more demons.

People can become possessed in many ways. It usually involves opening yourself up to the devil through Ouiji Boards, psychics, mediums, communicating with spirits, etc.

I know it can feel uncomfortable watching exorcist movies and studying the topic - I feel this way, too. I’m not sure if this could open up your soul to possession; I’d talk to a priest about that or maybe someone else can offer their insight on this website!

Make sure to always have faith in God and know that He is stronger than the devil.

God bless! :signofcross:

Ouija boards are a pretty modern invention and were not originally associated with the occult:
Following its commercial introduction by businessman Elijah Bond on July 1, 1890,[1] the Ouija board was regarded as a parlor game unrelated to the occult until American Spiritualist Pearl Curran popularized its use as a divining tool during World War I.[2] Spiritualists believed that the dead were able to contact the living and reportedly used a talking board very similar to a modern Ouija board at their camps in Ohio in 1886 to ostensibly enable faster communication with spirits.[3]
Some Christian denominations have “warned against using Ouija boards”, holding that they can lead to demonic possession.

“Ouija” is a trademark of Hasbro, Inc., an American multinational toy and board game company.

Oh great.
Another Ouija board thread.
:dts:

People get possessed when they become "fascinatedly with evil.

I don’t recommend it.

Demonic activity happens everyday to everyone and this is when we are tempted to do sins. However, there are extraordinary cases of demonic activity leading to things such possession.

A lot of times, this extreme form of demonic activity occurs when somebody invites a demonic entity into their lives and it can happen in a multitude of ways. The most common way is by conjuring it through occultic rituals. Also, sometimes people can invite a demonic entity into their lives when they commit a very sever sin (like murder) or go through a very traumatic event.

(Sometimes demons try to attack very holy people in order to lead them away and distract them from God. There are story’s of many Saints encountering demons.)

When a demon is invited into the life of someone the demonic spirit will do everything in its power to make that person or the people around that person life miserable. The main stages leading up to demonic possession include:

**1. Demonic Obsession - People in this stage can have suicidal thoughts or thoughts of committing violent actions.
2. Demonic Oppression - This is where paranormal activity could occur and the demonic spirit could repeatedly attack a person both mentally and physically in some way.
3. Demonic Possession - This is when a demon is able to control a persons body, most of the time without that persons consent.
**
(I want to quickly note that the signs of demonic activity could also be signs of mental illness. So before any conclusions could be made proper psychological evaluation must be done. The Church thoroughly investigates cases of “demonic possession” to rule out the possibility of mental illness. Most of the time it is mental illness but there are a few cases where mental illness could be ruled out and demonic activity can be confirmed.)

In order to counter such demonic attacks a exorcism is needed. Exorcisms aren’t always necessarily preformed on a person and can preformed on objects and even entire property’s (such as in cases of demonic infestation). Exorcism should only be preformed by clergy, and not lay. Lay could technically preform one, but the Church does not permit it since lay people are generally not experienced. Even most priest shouldn’t preform exorcisms and typically when an exorcism is approved by a Bishop, a priest who specialized in this area will be called in. Exorcism can be dangerous, and there have been reports of it being fatal. Though this is rare. Exorcism are preformed by calling out the demon, praying to God to release this person from the demon, and invoking many Saints to pray for us to get through such an intense spiritual battle. The rite of exorcism was historically preformed in Latin, though in 1999 the Church approved the use of vernacular.

Keep in mind, these things do not happen everyday and are rare. Most of the time it’s a mental illness. Exorcisms are a very serious matter that should never be taken lightly.

Unhealthy curiosity can certainly open one up to it, as can playing games that are supposed to predict the future or conjure the dead (whatever form those may take, including ouija boards, tarot cards, and the like.

It’s not something to take lightly, for sure - best to stay away from such things, and occupy your time with work, chores, and healthy recreation.

I believe you must want to be possessed. As others said it starts with a curiosity about Ouija boards & toying with séances and thinking the devil can make you famous.

I always wonder if people back in ancient times, when they blamed demons for almost everything, I wonder if they were not right all along and its only because the modern world has allowed itself to drift so far away from God and the truth, that we now have ‘scientific or medical explanations’ for these things, we will believe just about anything we are told if it comes from someone we consider a scientist, doctor, or other ‘expert.’ but all for we know, this could be part of the plan…it could be all deception?

I cannot think of one example where the secular scientific or medical community would admit to something being truly from God, or supernatural in nature, I tend to even think when we start seeing some of the things predicted in the end times, our modern experts will try to explain them away and sadly many will probably fall for the lies.

This is not correct. Malachi Martin’s book, “Hostage to the Devil”, makes clear reference that medical conditions are ruled out by psychiatrists and related medical professionals well in advance of attempting any type of exorcism on a possessed individual.

In fact, a Catholic exorcist will not perform an exorcism until a thorough medical evaluation over many months proves that no mental or psychiatric condition exists.

Secondly, the “perfectly possessed” can appear quite normal on the outside, even generous, friendly, congenial. But, on the inside they are pure unadulterated evil.

Martin’s book is an excellent primer on the subject. Possession takes form in stages until a person becomes “perfectly possessed”, which means they are completely taken over by demonic forces.

Don’t kid yourself. Demons are very real, and very powerful. They are not to be trivialized under the guise of a “medical disorder”.

I personally think that someone would have to deliberately open themselves up to it, by experimenting with the occult in some way that could expose themselves to something negative.

The perfectly possessed people would have to be the scariest. You never know what is in a person’s heart

It is no accident
I don’t always think so; No.

I read one account somewhere on the internet where some young teenagers wanted to see if something would happen when they did something occult–I forgot what the incident was–but they definitely invited something demonic into one of their homes. One of them actually saw the creature running around the home.

I would not want to try and find out, that’s for sure!! Nooooo!

You do NOT have to be open to evil to become possessed. Look at Emily Rose- she was a devout Catholic.

I highly recommend the book “An Exorcist Tells his Story” by Fr. Gabriele Amorth.

Emily Rose was a character in a movie, and I have heard at least one exorcist comment on how that film was completely inaccurate as to the actual process of becoming possessed. Simply sitting around in a state of grace of suddenly finding one’s body possessed by demons is not the way these things work.

The real person on whom Emily Rose was based is generally understood to have been a willing victim soul.

Do not scare me.
One has to open themselves to the demonic in some way, and God has to permit the demon to posses a person’s body as a result.

People talk about doing obvious things to get possessed, while the natural consequence of even one mortal sin is effectively demonic possession.

Most of us are shielded from those effects.

However, I’ve also heard an exorcist opine that as many as two-thirds of United States males might very well be plagued by demonic obsession, and pornography is the number one reason.

Most of the time it’s a mental illness.
Psychiatry cannot determine whether a great many mental illnesses are entirely natural or preternatural in any given case. It simply assumes that all mental illness is rooted in the disordered functioning of the brain, and nothing else.

But signs of mental illness do not necessarily imply that a person is not manifesting signs of the demonic.

This is why only exorcism can reveal a demon, since the signs that accompany demonic manifestation are completely unmistakable.
