How do prayers help people in purgatory?

I think it might be more like some souls saying, “No, no - let me try it by myself - if I need your help I’ll ask for it.” Because even in Purgatory people experience pride and stubbornness - these are among the things they are trying to conquer. 😉
Oh, okay. but if I end up in Purgatory if I should not die before baptism, and go straight to hell, I would think I would be praying for the ones I loved here, even if not for my stubborn self.

Interesting though. I guess thats part of the thing we would be most clinging to, pride and stubborness. Jesus knows I did most of my life, even now.

I dont like the thought of no one praying for me while I am there, because I dont know any Catholics to do so for me. Unless, other non protestants do this? Because from what I can see they think its a doctrine of the devil.

Your wording is unclear. Are you not baptised, but now in RCIA with the Roman catholic Church? If so, and you die in a state of grace before baptism by water, you have what is called a Baptism Of Desire.

Oh. This is confusing, because if you do this, what about the prayers that are going up for you while you are in purgatory?
Do they get assigned to others in need of them then?

Does this mean if someone offers a Mass for your soul, its wasted or goes to another soul???
For one who has made the Heroic Act, all prayers, indulgences, and masses will NEVER be wasted. Mother Mary will assign them to the Poor Souls as she desires.

  1. not baptised, I was raised by atheists.
  2. not in Rcia, because not getting a call back from the priest to talk about it yet, but expect hopefully soon:)
  3. this leaves me in a bad situation. I could not only be facing hell, but my 5 yr old also if we should die.

Ya know Notsmart, I think you need to change your handle to Getting Smarter! I’ve noticed a growth in your understanding just in the short time of these past few posts on various threads! Praise God - you’re getting it! Whatever you’re doing, keep it up! In the meantime, we’ll keep praying for your Conversion. What a grace-filled time you are in. Praise the Lord from Whom all blessings flow!

Peace,

Gail
