How do Protestants defend and explain the Trinity from the Bible alone.

Trinity is implied in scripture, but I don’t think it is explicitly mentioned. Protestants, how do you defend and explain it from the Bible alone? I am asking this since I’m working with some other Protestants in defending the faith against non-Christians. As a Catholic, my defense of the Trinity is rather straightforward - through Scripture and Tradition. However, when working together with Protestants, I have to restrict myself to a “Sola Scriptura” attitude.

So 1) What is the Trinity? Elaborate it. Explain the relationships between the persons.
2) Support the above using Scripture alone.
Sorry but I don’t understand. Why are you limited to sola scriptura with Protestants? Huge huge numbers of Protestants don’t rely exclusively on the bible. Surely if you are “working” with other Protestants you know this?

My dear WesleyF, In post #13, I answered your question from post #1. This obviously didn’t satisfy you so in post #19 you expanded the question to include statements from church creeds.
Actually, you should have read post 5 and 7 as well. It’s the same question which I repeated in post 19.
It seems to me and accept my appology if I’m wrong, that you are reluctant to agree in concept that the Bible is capable of answering the question without help from church teachings.
I would readily agree only if someone would show it to me. I asked 3 basic questions in post 5 and repeated the same in post 19. Nobody has provided any biblical evidence for that.
Your Muslim friend knows this as well and is using your reliance on extrabiblical teaching to discredit your faith.
He may not possibly be able to discredit my faith, because I prove to him that we don’t go by the Bible alone. I had posed that question to him once (to prove that all the faith is contained in the Bible), but he didn’t answer.
This is the exact same tactic that some Catholics use to discredit protestants and Christians of all stripes can and do use it to discredit Muslims by asking them to prove their doctrine from the Koran. They have the same problem and they know it.
Well, in that case I would have not defended the Trinity solely from the scriptures when that Muslim challenged our group. I would have stepped back and let my Protestant colleagues do the talking so as to expose the weakness of Sola Scriptura. But in all sincerity, I didn’t do it. I have not tried this tactic on my Protestant colleagues so far. My only concern is, what would they have said in my absence? I can’t ask them that question now (since I myself gave all that I could from the scripture! :D), but I want to ask other Protestants over here. Luckily, that Muslim didn’t ask the 3 questions I asked in post 5. If he had asked those, I would not be able to answer him solely from the scriptures. Would you?
You want a quick answer to the question and you want it now. Pick up any protestant theology book, I can make recomendations if you want to find your answer.
I don’t think I need to read a whole theology book to get three simple questions answered. If, like me, you don’t know the answer, let others do the talking.
But your problem is much more difficult than that because you do not believe in your heart that the Bible alone can answer the question and you are not willing to spend the many hours studying the Bible in context to get it stright in your head and heart.
Yes, I don’t believe that the Bible alone is sufficient, but I certainly didn’t expect that insult from you. You may have studied much more than me, but you are quick to insult. What’s the use of all that study then, if you yourself don’t follow what the Bible teaches? How do you know I’m not willing to spend hours studying the Bible? Do you know even 1% about me and my relationship with the Lord?
You could recite Bible verses to your friend to try to bluff your way through but if you don’t understand the full Biblical doctrine of the trinity you will stumble when you are asked follow on questions that he already has prepared to ask you.
It seems to me that it is you who have stumbled to explain it from the Bible.
If I were you and a Muslem asked me that question, my answer would be “I know I can do it but I have to prepare my answer. I will study it and get back to you when I’m ready”. Then I would do what ever it takes in time and energy to find the answer and if for some reason I cannot find the answer, I would have to re-evaluate my belief in the doctrine.
Then assume that I’m a Muslim and I am asking you those 3 questions which I asked in post 5 (or 19) and do as you say you would have done.
So WesleyF, you can get all annoyed at me for being honest and to the point or you can get busy and hit the books, the choice is yours to make. All you are getting out of me is this: you can prove the Trinity from the Bible. I’m not going to do your homework for you thought.
That’s sounds more like an escapist attitude to me. It’s not my homework, it’s your homework.
But if you take my advice to heart and spend the time in God’s word, God will reward you with a knowledge that transcends all understanding.
I do spend time in God’s word, I hope you do as well.

I didn’t know this. And as it is, I’m afraid to ask them about it. I guess most of them don’t know I’m a Catholic! 😃 Asking them that question would spill the beans.

Re: post #42 It is my opinion that you started this thread in an attempt to prove a point of theology, not in a sincere quest to get an answer to a question. I have answered your questions and concerns as honestly as I can. For me to just give you Bible verses for you to repeat to someone else without you either convinced in your heart that you are being factual or having the prerequsite background knowledge would be a major disservice to you and I will not do it. You admit that you believe that sola scripture is invalid so this begs the question, why are you asking this question?

I also will not be baited into defending my posts just because you are trying your best to be insulted. Your sophmoric tactic re: attempting to deflect my charge to you to do your homework is silly, you are the one asking the question not me. I will be more than happy to continue discussions with you, that is if you are really wanting to have a conversation, which I hope you are.

Ralph,

I will get back to you later when I get the time. As another poster mentioned that you are a good guy and from what I can see I think he is correct.

😊 THank you. I am just like everyone else. I just keep reminding myself that everyone is fighting a dificult battle in this world and I try not to add to it.

I look forward to hearing from you. I think you are a great addition to our little discussion

And why did you assume such a thing? It’s not my fault that you are cynical. Heal yourself. If I had to prove a point of theology, I would have come to it striaght away, I would not beat around the bush.
You admit that you believe that sola scripture is invalid so this begs the question, why are you asking this question?
Because I am genuinely interested in knowing how Protestants defend the Trinity (specifically, the 3 questions that I asked) from the Bible alone. When I didn’t know so much about my own Catholic theology, I also unknowingly believed that the Bible was all we had and I had spent many hours in online discussions with Muslims regarding the Trinity. I’m just thankful that they didn’t themselves understand the Trinity :D, and therefore didn’t ask me the questions I asked in post 5. If I was asked those questions, I still don’t know how I would have responded. And mind you, in those online discussions, many Protestants were also participating, and even they were making the same points that I was making in defence of the Trinity. But I never saw anyone say anything in regard to those 3 questions which I now have in my mind. Muslims are going to ask these questions eventually, when they have a broader understanding of the Trinity.
I also will not be baited into defending my posts just because you are trying your best to be insulted.
If you don’t want to, it’s up to you. I’ll wait for other Protestants to answer my questions. I didn’t try my best to be insulted, rather your cynicism and prejudice provoked you to insult me
Your sophmoric tactic re: attempting to deflect my charge to you to do your homework is silly, you are the one asking the question not me.
Yes, I am the one asking the questions. And I don’t see the answers in my Bible. So I’m asking others. Is there no one here competant enough to answer them?

Asking is usually better than assuming. I think you have solved your own problem. why are you afraid to tell them your RC?

Coz some of them read books like the Left Behind series which say that the pope is anti-Christ! 😃

I live in the southeastern USA, I can sympathize. It is surprising how ingrained certain strange beliefs about Catholicism are here in the south. I don’t like to argue with anyone and if I am fellowshipping with other Christians, I would rather not have to defend my faith.

What I have found works is to be VERY Catholic. That might seem strange but if you start crossing yourself after prayers, wear a crucifix etc. then any problems will surface at the beginning of the relationship. Anybody who is simply curious and has questions will ask early in your relationship and you can provide answers. I am not saying to be obnoxious but it does help to deflect a lot of problems if everyone is open at the start.

That last little bit, about needing a good systematic theology is the key. One of the reasons that so many Catholics have trouble with some protestants is because they lack that one little thing, and we have no idea how to discuss with them. Lutherans, for example, have a well-developed and solid theological system, making discussion easier, though not always more effective.

If I do not get a chance to say so, I wish you and yours a good Holy Week.👍
That’s an interesting point. If we stick to reformed theology though we have at least a start. I agree many evangelicals today use their own interpretations of scripture which is why we have such division.

But the problem I personally have is that Catholic theology is grounded both in tradition and scripture. While I don’t discount sacred tradition we can never actually prove or know if those teachings came from Christ or the Apostles. It’s a very large assumption. So when we reach certain obstacles in teaching Catholics often cite tradition as if that makes a theological point when in fact many traditions are man-made.

I hope you and your family have a blessed Holy Week as well 🙂

For lack of a better phrase, it becomes a matter of faith. Naturally, with the Trinity, everyone who agrees with the Catholic CHurch better hope we have it right.
