I am not going to debate that “Love is God” for the reasons I have already stated. It is all the same debate. I will only say that if you think that Christian love is somehow truer or better than, say, Buddhist love or Hindu love because they worship false Gods, then I likely would at least make a few remarks. But let’s not debate whether there IS a God or not.
Maybe I wasn’t clear? I was asking how do you define Love of neighbor?

I was not comparing Christian Love with others as if to gauge between them. If you can define Buddhist love of neighbor and Hindu Love of neighbor between your love of neighbor? for learning and informing purposes here, instead of the false pretense of competing each definition with one another.

Peace be with you

What?

Why do I need to define “love thy neighbor as thyself”? It speaks for itself, does it not? Simply, do not put yourself before others. Or, love others as much as you love yourself. Or, Accept others as you would wish to be accepted.

Take your pick. 🤷

Often, yes. Grey areas are tough, though.

why?
Well, all of us have knowledge of natural moral laws, ie. stealing, cheating, murder, adultery, etc… Were would this knowledege come from? There are some people who have never even known God that acknowledge these basic things.

But the claim that the Bible is in “complete harmony” makes no sense except to the eyes of faith, and even many believers have trouble agreeing with your statement entirely. There are plenty of ways in which the Bible can be seen to be in less than perfect harmony. You may choose to ignore these–but they are there anyway.

This sounds good, but when you go through these one by one you find that most of them fall into one of two categories:
  1. They are so vague and ambiguous that they could apply to a lot of things, and Christians have chosen to apply them to Jesus (see Matt. 1:23, Matt. 2:15, and Matt. 2:23).
  2. It is quite possible that Christian writers made up the fulfillment (or in some cases that Jesus deliberately set out to fulfill the prophecy–riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, for instance). Since there is almost no external confirmation of the events described in the NT, this could cover pretty much all the fulfilled prophecies. For instance, how do we know (except on the basis of faith in the truth of Scripture and the teaching of the Church) that Jesus’ bones were really unbroken? How do we know that He was actually born in Bethlehem? How do we know that He really rode into Jerusalem on a donkey? How do we know that He fled to Egypt with His parents and later returned, making Hosea’s words about calling Israel out of Egypt apply to Him personally? Only on the testimony of the Gospel writers themselves.
I don’t dismiss the argument from prophecy altogether. I think that passages such as Isaiah 53 do make even more sense when you think of them as pointing to Jesus (as well as to the people of Israel collectively). But the purely statistical argument on which you rely has no validity whatever. It’s a dishonest argument and Christians should stop using it.

That’s certainly a valid argument, but of course it’s a subjective one. People whose lives have not been changed in this way, or who think they see reason to believe that the Bible has made people’s lives worse, are not going to be affected by it!

And in places Christians have struggled to reconcile it with what we now think we know on that subject.

Not something that can yet be directly verified:p

This is an extremely far-fetched interpretation. You appear to be thinking of Job 38:14, which most translations render as “change,” not “turn” in the sense of “rotate.” We had better leave these kinds of arguments to the Muslims–they only discredit us.

What are these?

Says who?

Sure, and these are rather obvious, aren’t they?

And there we see that your opinions are not just harmless error but are downright evil. You would teach us to abandon care for God’s creation on the basis of your apocalyptic delusions.

Again, I think this is one that has weight. But it’s not a conclusive proof, just something that should make people think a little. (For one thing, Israel *didn’t *remain in existence continuously–it just keeps coming back, most recently after a lapse of nearly 1900 years!)

If this happens “continually,” why is it that the HIttites are the one example one hears cited over and over? Yes, there are cases of this–but there are many other examples where archeology either creates problems for the Biblical narrative or just fails to turn up any evidence. For instance, Jericho was destroyed several times, but none of the destructions seem to fit the Biblical chronology. There is no archeological evidence of the Israelites’ wandering in the wilderness, and not much evidence for a conquest of Canaan as described in Joshua. There is no undisputed contemporaneous evidence for the kingdoms of David and Solomon, even though the Bible describes them as glorious little empires.

This is a convenient argument for you, because if anyone points out that your arguments don’t hold up, you can dismiss them as not being real Christians. Well, that’s the risk I’ll have to take, because you discredit the Faith by these poor arguments.

Edwin,

I have never met a Christian that was not convinced by the Spirit of God that the Scripture is infallible and inerrant. Are you claiming to be a Christian and at the same time believe the Scripture is fallible or errant? I have met plenty who process to be Christian and also believe that the Word of God contains error.

Right, and your dogma leads you to claim that they are not Christians. That makes your initial statement empty. You have never “met a Christian” who didn’t believe in inerrancy because you define those who don’t believe in inerrancy as not really being Christian.

I’m sorry for this, but there’s nothing to be done. You claim that one can easily find errors in the Apocrypha. Well, the same kinds of “errors” are found in the undisputed books–you just refuse to see it. (Note: I said the same kind, not the same degree. I would tend to agree that Judith and Tobit are more obviously unhistorical than any of the undisputed books.

I believe that Scripture does unerringly what God inspired it to do, when rightly interpreted under the guidance of the Holy Spirit according to the Rule of Faith transmitted by the Church.

For clarification here; What I find amusing here is that Protestants are trying to argue from afar, pretending that Protestant new man made theologies are in existence when it is only the Catholic church defending the Apostolic teachings and Traditions for last 2000 years since Pentecost. History does matter to every Catholic Because when history accurately records the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Church in existence never Protestantism.

Matthew 16:14-18 of Jesus building his Church upon Peter comes from Jesus and is taught for 2000 years by the Early Church Fathers, Saints and Martyrs. Only those who oppose this apostolic biblical interpretation from Jesus is a late interpretation from Protestants.

There is only one interpretation of Matthew 16 and it certainty is never my interpretation. Let us be clear here, Matthew 16 biblical interpretation comes from those canonized books of the bible as being the inspired Word of God.

Please don’t confuse or make the mistake that Catholic biblical interpretations as being mine, because I am never at liberty to interpret scripture contrary to the Early Church Fathers, Saints, Martyrs and the Magisterium of the Catholic church. Protestants on the other hand are at liberty to believe when, what and how they interpret scripture from every wind of doctrine that comes from them.

Actually it is allot simpler than that. We Catholics hold to our profession of faith which is the foundation of our belief system in Christ crucified. Understanding the Apostolic profession of faith is the beginning. All other defined and clarified Apostolic Traditions and teachings will come into better focus, for example the doctrine of the “Trinity”, trinity was never a word used by the Apostles and early church fathers, but it was believed in. Four hundred years later when the essence of Christ came under attack, defining the “Trinity” became essential to holding to the Apostolic oral and written teachings. The Roman Catholic Church has maintained, defended the Apostolic Catholic Traditions and teachings fully intact in every age unchanged. If you take this profession of faith out of its original Catholic interpretation then you have another gospel

cont;
Funny, but not really, God predestined who would be called “sons of God” before the foundation of the world. From my understanding that was about 4000 plus years before the day of Pentecost. Also, the Scripture says the entire fallen creation, including men and Angels are waiting for the revealing of the “sons of God”, the only church Jesus is building. Funny, but not really funny is that in Israel, the message was to forget the external ways of reconciling with God and because of Israels failure to listen, there was only a remnant that believed by faith alone in God and counted on His grace. Funny, but not really, the New Testament says the exact same thing and said that Israel’s trouble is for our benefit so as to not repeat the same religion of externals but to come to Him with a true heart, the inside, of repentance. For John the Baptist, Jesus and others stated “repent for the Kingdom is at hand”; for it is the gospel of repentance where one dies to self, in favor of Christ and by faith alone by his grace He will save those who die to “self” and live for Christ. Jesus said Himself that few find the way, which is Jesus, and even those that do find Him are unable to yet strive to enter, again only a remnant of those who claim God as their savior by their obedience to him as Lord are able to enter into God’s rest.

Nothing has changed, so we must examine the mistakes of Israel and learn from them and strive to enter after finding the Way, the Truth and the Life, which is Christ. Jesus said that the one that dies to himself; yet will he live in Christ. He also said, deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow Me. What is the common theme that prevents men from entering? Self righteousness or not willing to die to self or believing there is something in you that can earn or merit or work your way to please God and thus “deserve” saving grace", which is a false gospel and is the gospel of works-self-righteousness that is the broad road marked with a large sign pointing to Heaven; yet the many who travel on that religious path are sorely surprised at the end of the road when the road leads to separation from God. How tradgic, but this is the way it is with man and man’s ways are not God’s way.

However; He loved mankind enough to give his son as a ransom for those that are will to repentant from the heart and totally deny themselves and follow and serve Him. Few there be that find Him and those that do are still unable to strive to enter. Matthew 7 & Luke 13.

Nothing has changed; so the core question is are you part of the remnant and have you learned from mistakes of the Israelites? Are you going to heaven? I am.

Hello? What kind of question is that? Catholic bishops were the bishops of the Church, the universal Church. They worked on behalf of all Christians. We, Protestants, Orthodox, Anglicans, Roman Catholics, are all heirs of the universal church who formed the NT canon. It is about time that Catholics stop thinking that it was “their” bishops who compiled the NT canon. It was one church and we all are heirs of that church.
According to Jesus only a few find the Way and even those that do find it; many are unable to enter through Him. So the statement highlighted above is a fallacy to begin with. Everyone better examine themselves and see whether they are in Christ Jesus because just in the OT, the NT says the same that only a remnant who claim to be Christians will actually and really enter into God’s rest. If one learns and understands and applies the errors of Israel, then they may very well find entrance into His Kingdom and it would be because of your religion.

Yes Jerome had a different opinion, but he put aside his will for the authority of the church, which is why he included the 7 books. He was NOT the voice of the entire church. Finally, the early church used the LXX as its Bible and even many Protestant Study Bibles affirm it.
But not as inspired from the Holy Spirit; affirmed in that it was used for moral teachings and devotional studies, but not divine revelation. If it were truly divine, then the author the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of error and all of the Bible should be counted as untrustworthy in all it contents.

Actually, I believe that the person who came up with the 33000 denomination figure counted something like 280 denominations within the Catholic Church alone. I think that’s crazy–but then I’m not the one using the 33,000 figure!

Excuse me? 28,000 denominations within the Catholic Church? I would love to read the source claiming there exist 280 denominations within Catholicism. I would like to read the names of such ‘denominations’ within the Catholic Church.
Ditto on the 33k & 280

Predetermined by God? No,because it was a process taking nearly 400 years. God guided the church though the process, but I do not believe he predetermined it and the church had to determine His predetermination.
Then you do not understand Scritpure nor the nature and purpose of God. God purposed all of creation and this includes both you and I. It is God’s creation, not yours and not mine and not the Catholic Church’s or the Luthern Church or any other church. The “sons of God” are going to be revealed sometime in the near future, that will be the church that Jesus, not Peter built and you can take that to the bank. Religion is the most damning tool of the devil in my opinion, he uses religion to try to thwart the predestined purposes of God, which he can never do, but he has been very sucessful at using religion to damn many souls, just look at Israel as our example.

With your permission I would like to interject myself into this debte.

A main dificulty in dicussing Bible authortiy with non-Catholics, is that many literally DO NOT ACCEPT God Himself at His word; nor do many of them actually accept that the Bible is a God Controlled and FULLY Inspired document. No one part can contradict another. [2 Tim. 3:16-17] Is either completely TRUE or none of the BIble can be ued to teach truth. SO WHICH IS IT FRIEND?

A second major difficulty arises from the FACTS that the ONLY ONE [as in “ONE” Eph.2:19-20, Eph. 4:4-8… “church” not temple or synagogue; was what became known as todays Catholic Church, when th bible was collected, th NT writen an h Canon was firmly set ansealed wiht the promise of the HS. The NT was written by Catholics exclusively for Catholics; who where writting to specific church communites, and were not thinking about publication rights for future generations; most especally as it would turn out; NOT for brethern of heretics. This is powerful evidence of Divine Providence and Godly Inspirtation; that what was written so long ago still has GREAT revelance to so many today.

**Acts 8:30, Rom.10:17, 1 Tim.4:13 and 2 Peter 1: 20-21
all bestow the prudent advice that understanding the Bible comes from “Hearing the Word of God” [NOT READING and self interpertation]. Why? Lk.24:45 Luke.24
“Then he [Jesus] opened their minds[The Apostles] to understand the scriptures”,

It is illogical an pride-filled ignorance to presume the right to ursurp authority God gave to His Church through the Apostles, on understanding the bible, as belonging to all. Non-Catholic lack of understanding has resulted in THOUSANDS of non-Catholic denominations and sets of beleif. Clearly not-biblical. NOT the Mind, heart, and Will of God. Amen!

If you would care to share some of “the diferences” in NT - CC Teaching and what you chose to accept; I will address and clarify with evidence what and why we teach as we do?

Lets suppose YOU author a book about what ever your speciality is. Would you expect **eveyone **to be able to understand and apply correcty all that you tauhgt? Not if your realistic. That is why the Bible “birthrd” by the CC and written for the CC ALONE is empowered and entrusted by God for this task. [John 14: 16-17; John 17: 14-20]

As fo your “woodshed” remark… WHY did Chrsit do this? For OBEDIENCE or DISOBEDIENCE? 🤷

Love and prayers friend,
Pat

Do you believe the DC’s are inspired by God, which means they are both inerrant and infallible since the author is God, the Holy Spirit? If so, then why would you consider the DC’s as the inspired word of God when they are known to contain several errors? Do you homework and use Yahoo or Google and search the DC’s and known errors and see for yourself and see if you stick with the convictions you claim or you give them up in favor of the truly inspired word of God.

Edwin,

I have never met a Christian that was not convinced by the Spirit of God that the Scripture is infallible and inerrant. Are you claiming to be a Christian and at the same time believe the Scripture is fallible or errant? I have met plenty who process to be Christian and also believe that the Word of God contains error.
There is always room for learning!

This idea of ‘40,00 different denominations’ is meaningless IMO. Consider the different pratices by the members of the CC. The CC is just as fragmented if you look at practices from within. Note the following responses.

Before reading my response, I’m not judging anyone just pointing out the fallicy of using ‘40,00 different denominations’. I surely can’t or shouldn’t ‘throw any stones’.
Because, if you’re only sure that “some” of the CC’s doctrines are correct and take those and form your own church, what you end up with is 40,000 different Christian denominations.

Let’s take this list here:

  1. ]Abortion - How many catholics has had abortions or think it’s no big deal?]Attend weekly services, don’t have to go to Church - How many catholics don’t go to church every week?
    *]Baptism
*]Can men and women sit together during services?
*]Charity or no charity (help one another or let them help - How many catholics aren’t charitable to their neighbor?
*]Church leadership, or no leadership - How many catholics think the pope is wrong on a number of things - like abortion?
*]Death/Soul Sleep - How many catholics don’t care?
*]Divorce - How many catholics are divorced?
*]Drinking allowed, drinking not allowed) - How many catholics drink to get drunk?
*]Head coverings or no head coverings - Some catholic women practice ‘head coverings’ and many don’t. How’s correct?
    *]Health and wealth gospel
*]Hell, or no hell - How many catholics live if there is no hell?
*]Homosexuality - How many catholics don’t care or are homosexuals?
*]Is God‘s Holy Name Jehovah - How many catholics think only Jehovah’s Witnesses call God Jehovah?
*]Is it permissible for women to teach Scripture?
*]Judge others, don’t judge others - How many catholics judge while having a log in their own eyes?
*]Music or no music (Singing or no singing)
    *]Once saved, always saved
    *]Ordination
*]Predestination - How many catholics don’t give it one thought?
*]Rapture - How many catholics don’t even know what this is?
*]Sola scriptura/private interpretation - How many catholics don’t give the Bible any real thought?
*]The Eucharist (Communion) - Of those catholics that don’t go to church much, how many take communion properly each week?
    *]themselves)
*]Tongues (some believe others are not saved if they don’t speak in tongues) -How many catholics don’t even know what tongues is?
    *]Trinity vs. Unitarianism
*]What is original sin and its effects on humanity - How many catholics think they’re not too bad to be rejected by God?
*]What’s a sin, what is not a sin - How many catholics don’t give sin a second thought because they’d have to change their live style if they really did?
*]When to celebrate the Lord’s Day - How many catholics go out of obligation and can’t wait to ‘escape’ church the very instant they’ve done their obligation?
    *]Women pastors, no women pastors

That’s 30 differing opinions that can arise, based on reading Scripture. Take permutations of that and you could get hundreds of thousands of theologies.

Confusion, chaos and uncertainty–that’s what we’ve got!

This is a paradigm designed by the Author of Confusion, if I ever heard of one!

  1. Take the permutations of the different real life practices within all the catholics in the world any in practice you have quite a few denomintations all in the name of the CC.

Yep–and it’s called “Protestantism”. If Catholics disagree with the CC on abortion or their Sunday obligation etc etc, they are becoming their own pope, just like Protestants do.

Now, thanks to this paradigm that “The HS will lead me to the correct understanding of Scripture” we have lots and lots of chaos and confusion with tens of thousands of denominations, each teaching their own version of what the Gospel means. Sometimes even teaching contrary doctrines.

*How could the Holy Spirit be responsible for that? *

Incidentally, that paradigm of “The HS will lead me to the correct understanding of Scripture” contradicts Scripture.

[bibledrb]Acts 8:30-31 [/bibledrb]

Even the Ethiopian, a learned man, understood that he could not come to his own personal interpretation of Scripture without “someone showing him” the correct one.

Your challenge to me about ‘The HS will lead me to the correct understanding of Scripture’ only has meaning if I’ve made the statement. I’m getting older and may have forgotten I’ve said it, but to my present knowledge I don’t know I’m said this on CAF. If I have, it would surely NOT be with the understanding you’re portraying.

PR, kind of hard not to slam protestants, isn’t it?!. BTW, I freely admit the divide within protestantism. Are you willing to admit the division within the CC (individual members believing as they will)? If I’m correct that a great number of catholics disagree with Rome to one degree or another and you say then they aren’t really catholics, then your church is quite a bit smaller than the stats might suggest.

What do you make of this quote from Jesus?

Lu 9:50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is on our side.”

Well, dear Dokimas, you are coming late into this discussion (which you are, of course, welcome to do!) so you are responding to an on-going discussion about this paradigm of “The HS will lead me to the correct understanding of Scripture”.
PR, kind of hard not to slam protestants, isn’t it?!
I try never to slam Protestants. Just Protestantism. 😃

And if you think this is a minor distinction, it’s not.

Look at the difference between these statements:

“The CC is at war with poverty”
vs
“The CC is at war with the poor.”

The first is correct. The second is false. Just a minor change in spelling and we get 2 totally different ideas.

-Are you willing to admit the division within the CC (individual members believing as they will)?
Absolutely not!

The fact that there’s thousands of un-catechized Catholics is heartbreaking indeed. That does not change the fact that the Catholic Church is united in its teachings. If you want to know what the CC teaches, it’s quite easy to know.

I am certain that after being here on the CAFs *you *are more informed about Catholicism than most Catholics in the pews. :sad_yes:

In fact, I hope someday you are having a conversation with one of these Catholics and you can tell them, *“Actually, no, the CC does NOT teach that. It teaches this _____. You ought to learn more about your faith as it’s shameful that I know more about it than you do.” *I really hope you do this, Doki!
If I’m correct that a great number of catholics disagree with Rome to one degree or another and you say then they aren’t really catholics, then your church is quite a bit smaller than the stats might suggest.
That may be quite true indeed.

However, I do not make any judgments about whether someone is truly Catholic or not. Or even whether someone is truly Christian or not. For I know not the degree to which they are responsible for their own ignorance. If they are uninformed because they’ve never been taught the faith, then the guilt lies elsewhere.
What do you make of this quote from Jesus?
Lu 9:50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is on our side.”
I give a hearty “Amen!” to Jesus’ words! 👍

Then you should agree that believing that some of the teachings of the CC are incorrect is NOT being necessarily anti-catholic, correct? Not a minor distinction.

As for having a different opinion of some doctrines held by the CC and its people, I AM NOT anti-catholic nor desirous of slamming catholics.

You are very correct about me coming late to the discussion. Thank you for making me feel welcome in the discussion. As you know, I’m quite willing to share my opinion on subjects of interest to me.
