In what ways do souls in purgatory ask for prayers? A former teacher of mine who has since passed away has been on my mind lately in an almost nagging way. And yesterday I was startled when I saw someone who looked just like her. Am I paranoid or could she be asking for prayers from purgatory?

If she’s on your mind, then God may be inspiring you to pray for her. I do that when God seems to be putting a particular deceased soul in my path.

Whenever I run into something that makes me think of someone who passed away, or if thoughts of someone pop into my mind— I always say a prayer for their soul.

In addition to your quick mental prayers, why not be sure to include her in your prayers at Mass the next few times you go?

If you were really gung-ho, you might consider arranging a series of Gregorian Masses.

In my daily morning prayers, I pray those who have influenced me in my life and have passed away (that I know of/remember), ask for any I’ve forgotten and add a prayer for those souls in Purgatory who have none to pray for them. It weighs on my heart, sometimes, that so many don’t “believe in” Purgatory and who don’t pray for the departed because God is so nice, everyone must be in Heaven. So, I figured it’s God nudging me to keep up the prayers for the faithful in Purgatory 😉

One of my RCIA catechists would always pray for the souls in purgatory who had no one to pray for them. I try to do this now. Also, pray for the souls when you drive past a cemetery. any time you hear an emergency vehicle siren.

I have been praying anyway, but I was just wondering if God speaks to us in the ways I described. This individual was a non christian as far as I know, but I suppose if she literally didn’t know better she could be saved. Right?

We can never truly know the state of someone else’s soul. Also remember the labourers in the vineyard, those who worked only for a short time in the vineyard received the same pay as those who worked all day. If she called out to him in true repentance and faith at the hour of death, he will have saved her
