How do southern baptist feel about catholics?

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut. You see, my mother n law who is baptist, tries to get me to let my son go to her church instead of mine. She told me that he would learn more about jesus at her church than mine. Thats why i ask the question, just wondering if they all feel this way…

Tell her the easiest way to learn about someone is to meet them face to face. The only way to do that is to go to Mass.

That’s certainly the Independent, Fundamental Baptist position.

I was never “Southern” Baptist (they were too liberal ) but you could probably find some individuals within the SBC who believe that. Baptists stress “Individual Soul Liberty” as one of their distinctives, meaning that each of us can believe whatever we think the Bible is saying to us, which is why there are so many different varieties of Baptist. You can sit in an adult Sunday School class with a room full of Baptists, we’re talking members of the same church, and they will not necessarily agree with one another on the interpretation of certain passages of Scripture.

Cradlecathlic26, My husband’s family is SB and other than a few unsavory “catholic jokes” relayed by my MIL when we first got engaged, they have been very nice about my being catholic and raising their grandchildren catholic. Having said that, I have always made it perfectly clear that it was my way or the highway (concerning matters of faith for the kids) My way, of course, being the catholic faith. The kids have never attended one of their services, and we make no bones about our commitment to the church. Mind you, I have never been ugly about it. I have always been charitable, but clear and firm.

Just to show you how far things have come, last year my inlaws went to Rome and brought back blessed rosaries for my kids.

In the end, don’t let what anyone else thinks, says, or does, lead you away from your journey home. Pray for those who would mock you. Live your faith to the fullest in your own life, in your home with your DH and children. The best way to get MIL on board is to be a family of love and devotion to each other through your faith in the church. How can anyone deny the good fruit manifested in the faith filled family?

The only thing that I think would work with my dear family is, “Sorry, we aren’t Baptist anymore; we can’t accept Baptist beliefs, and we want to raise our son Catholic.” We’ll see; my son’s only three months old so far

I’m kind of used to harsh religious confrontations in my family by now.

It’s something all anti-Catholics (of all non-Catholic denominations) are taught.

I was just reflecting, this could be a serious aside and i dont want to hijack it, but Jesus did say by my fruits you will know me, right?

Now, since I’ve become Catholic, I’ve had a few run ins with other denominations, similar to the ones recounted here. They were not pleasant at all. It seems I am not alone with these interaction, and that this is a serious bad fruit (at least in my mind).

What do you guys think?

1/2 my family are Pentecostals.

The other 1/2 are Catholics.

We love each other without regard to our faiths.

To me, there is no excuse for any Christian to deny another’s denomination’s Christianity.

That is completely “unChristian” and therefore, if it is the teaching of their religious leader, we don’t say that their unChristian.

Their own words and deeds convict them.

Honestly I think that most Baptists strongly dislike the Catholic Church. I think they dislike other Protestant Churches as well. But I may be wrong because I have only known a handful of Baptists.

I have a friend who is a fairly new Baptist pastor.The leaders in his church claim to be southern Baptist but he just calls himself Christian or Baptist. We have discussed Catholicism since my journey began and he has openly and very firmly stated that “Catholics are not Christians”. He says they think “God is too Holy so they must go through Mary and the Saints to get to him”. He states that “a Christian should believe that no one goes to the Father unless through Jesus, and since Catholics go through Mary then they deny the importance of Jesus and give Mary undo worship”. Of course he is just one example and all Baptists can’t be thrown in with him, but he is an assoc. pastor and teaches others. If others were to ask him questions they most likely would get the same responses I did.

I’m curious. This friend- where did he study to “know” this? Where is this coming from? And what is required in order for one to become a Baptist pastor?

That is true for me too. I have a few Baptist friends and I’ve noticed that those who are really grounded and secure in their faith will generally leave me alone and respect what I believe. It’s those who are insecure on their journey and are looking for answers, who will take ‘Pastor Bob’ at face value and believe everything he says without question. Interestingly, they seem to be more interested in getting into it with Catholics because they are “worried about [my] soul” than they seem to be of non-Christians, who reject Jesus altogether. Maybe they figure we Catholics are more “reachable”, than, say, the Jews, Muslims or others. I have no idea. Just my observation living in the south.
