How do southern baptist feel about catholics?

People who feel the need to make ignorant comments obviously feel threatened.

Good question and as the world’s foremost expert on the subject of one former Baptist (that would be me) I can tell you that there were a few snide remarks made by the last preacher I listened to while in that denom but I entered the Church in 1998 so I don’t hear that stuff anymore. Sometimes attempts to smear someone or something can have an opposite effect.🙂

I will try to give you a decent answer but I need to get to an appointment this morning. My Baptist minister said from the pulpit that he could not accept the idea that Christ drank wine. This had me thinking " what else in the Bible don’t you accept". I also had a strong feeling that communion was much more than crackers and grape juice for a " memorial". I picked up a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and read it and the Bible verses cited. After a lot of reading I made the decision that If the Catholic Church was not the Church founded by Christ and the Church I needed to belong to than I was going to give it all up. I am still here 10 years later and I know I made a good decision.
I am also a history reader and history will lead one to the Church IMHO. Details on request thanks for asking.🙂

I’m back with a PS. Christ founded a Church for us and I want to surround myself with it. I don’t want Iris Cola ( with apologies to Safeway) I want the real thing. I don’t want a designer Christianity which blows in the wind. I want an anchor for the storm…a rock of faith, the oldest institution in the western world and it is free for the taking…come and take it.
I am not an apologist so if my feelings and experience conflict with yours ( meant for any reader not the addressee) then all I can do for you is pray that you will have another understanding. My understanding involves something bigger than any single Bible verse ponged across the broadband so forgive me for not wanting to engage in that game. It is fun for some but I would rather not… thanks.

You should be proud of yourself, and I am so happy for you. Nothing conflicts with me, you are a Catholic, you love God, therefore you found the truth in His church.
I love how you say you want an anchor for the storm…so true, if only others thought like you. God Bless You. You were chosen.

Using this logic Baptists are just as guilty for not being Christians, when they ask someone to pray for them. They are by mistake thinking that their friends have some power over God. lol 😃 Even thought St. Paul said this was ok. 👍
 
Wow, after reading the last few pages, I’m truly blessed that my dh and il’s attended one of the more “laidback” S. Baptist churches. I was terrified b/f I met them, I thought they were going to hate me, as I was not only Catholic, but had a bi-racial child out of wedlock (they’re from a very small rural Missouri town), but they’re 2 of the most wonderful, Christian people I’ve ever met.

One of the posts, about Baptists drinking beer (my ils, btw, are strict teetotalers) reminded me of a joke one of dh’s cousin (not sure if he’s baptist or not) told once: **Why should you take 2 Baptists w/ you on a float trip? Because if you take just 1 he’ll drink all your beer. ** Also, when dh and I went to Lynchburg, TN, we toured the Jack Daniels distillery. The tour guide was talking about how at some point, a Baptist was involved w/ it (I can’t remember the exact history). He went onto say "and that’s odd, because Baptists don’t drink AT ALL…(pause)…in front of each other 😛

My dh thought it was funny 😃

Thats good to hear of nice southern baptists. I have no dought that they are good nice people, but some are real quick to judge and redicle over beliefs.

When i was growing up, i was told that baptists dont believe in drinking or dancing. Some say that is not true, but when attending a baptist wedding, there is no alcohol or dancing going on. Us catholics, thats how we celebrate, dancing and drinking til the sun comes up!👍 😃
 
ok, so i got the honest truth of what baptist feel about catholics today. I listened to a serman/bible study on the internet, that came from a First Baptist Church, it said that the Whore of Babylon was indeed the Roman Catholic Church. I feel sorry for the people that are being brainwashed into believing this non-sense. :mad:

:console: You know, I used to be one of those Baptists. If God can change me, He can change anyone! It is very sad how easily people can be led to believe something if it’s repeated often enough and shouted loud enough. 😦
 
Ok, I spent several hours looking this up. I like this forum but my time spent on it is going to start doing horrible things to my grades.

It explains the big differences and at the end (my favorite part) counsels the reader on how to witness to Catholics … can that be read as “point out where they are wrong”?

Sadly that way of thinking of Southern Baptists and other evangelicals protestant has sad real world consequences as Franky Schaeffer points:

The “us” and “them” mentality is instilled in every born-again believer. To evangelicals there are actually two human races; the “sheep” and the “goats” in other words us and them. And the “them” includes all non-evangelical Christians.

The fact that Bush has managed to complete the work of radical Islam, and smash one of the last bastions of Christianity in the Middle East, is just fine with evangelicals: the destroyed people weren’t real Christians, just more of those mumbo-jumbo types. It isn’t as if we hired those Australians to shoot our fellow believers at some Billy Graham crusade! The murdered women were on their way to see their priest and they wouldn’t have needed all that “priest stuff” if they only had accepted Jesus into their hearts and become real Christians like us.

It seems almost every Protestant Church says that. I under why? Maybe because no one exactly knows what the Whore of Babylon is or what it will be. So you can’t disprove or prove the argument. Although to anyone who has an once of common sense they could see that this is not true. Protestants also tend to take Revelation way too seriously.
