Our daughter will be making her first communion soon and we were wondering what some of you have done after they do? Do you have a small gathering, do you get a cake etc. and what kind of special gift did you get? Your thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and God Bless

We have a party with family after mass. After all it’s a big important day. 👍 We usually have a cake as well.
Gifts are given by the Godparents, grandparents, and us. We like to make sure they get a rosary, a crucifix necklace, and a book for mass. Extras would be a miraculous medal, a saint medal, a bible, cross earrings.

Peace,
Jen

Take plenty of pictures. There are some very fine reasonably priced First Communion kits. You can find them at Autom. This is a Catholic catalogue. They have an online site.

Congratulations to your daughter,
Deacon Tony

Ah first Communion. What a great big day for all involved!I still remember mine which was… hmmm…let me count… 35 years ago. Couldn’t have felt any more special that day. My daughters was the same 11 years ago. I have her picture from that day framed and hanging next to mine in my office. Oh we went all out, she went to catholic school so there was a coffee social in the parish hall directly after. They served cake and punch and coffee and we took lots of pictures. Then we all went to our home for her favorite meal, chicken enchiladas. I give the same gift to all children of my friends who are making their first Communion. I buy them an umbrella, I cut out tons of hearts from red tissue paper and then fill the inside of the umbrella with them and then close it up. I attach a poem to the umbrella on a ribbon stating that" blessed are you today to have God’s love raining down upon you" and then make sure you have your camera ready as they hold the umbrella over their heads and open it. As you can picture the red tissue paper hearts will flutter down all over and around them. Kinda corny but they always are so excited about it. Good luck and God bless her on her most special day.

My son is recieving his first communion this april and we are having a reception for him. We have invited about thirty people or so. Mostly family and close friends. We have hired a caterer to provide food. We however have requested that no gifts are necessary. It is a very special day in the life of a catholic child. It is also the first grandchild to make first communion so there is alot of excitement. We the parents are planning to provide the gift for him. We just want our guests to enjoy the day with us and share in our joy.

My Godson and Great-Niece are having their First Holy Communion next month. There will be celebrations with family and close friends. Typically that is what you do. It’s up to you whether you want to do just cake or serve food too. They will be having a cookout and cake. The gift I chose for my Great-Niece was a Rosary Bracelet. They have them for children and there was a good selection to choose from at The Shrine Gift Shop near where I live. I think I will get my Godson a Crucifix to wear. The Leaflet Missal offers many things such as Rosaries, Prayer Books, Picture Frames or you could get a First Communion Bible for a gift. There website is www.leafletonline.com.

We’ve had 2 first communion parties in the last 4 years. We invited all the family and friends to the first communion mass and then a party at our house afterwards. We had a cake, presents, and lots of pictures.

They were both wonderful parties. Bakeries around here usually offer some type of first communion cakes decorated with appropriate decorations, like a chalice, a cross, or children kneeling.

With our daughter, we had to get the pictures taken right away because her dress was so itchy around the waist that she couldn’t stand it. If I had it to do over, I’d have had her wear a slip.

I was the catechist for my granddaughter’s First Communion class last year, and it was a most wonderful experience. She made her First Communion (and Confirmation in our parish and diocese!) at a Saturday evening liturgy–We went to the church about an hour early (we were the only ones there, besides Father) and we both went to Confession and then together we went up to the front of church and knelt in front of Jesus in the Tabernacle for a few minutes of quiet prayer. It is one of my most cherished, precious memories, and always will be.

God bless you all on that special day!

Does anybody know if the children have their first communion separate or is it with the rest of us? Thank you all for your great suggestions.

I beleive that they will be receiving Communion as a class. My daughter went to Catholic school and the children did lots of participation in the Mass. They brought up the gifts, they sang some songs, I think they did the offeratory prayer, and then when it came time for Communion they were all seated in the front rows of the church and went up before the general church members. I’m sure they will be having a practice before the big event.

Thanks for the ideas, might just use a few of them. God bless you!

My son is making his and I’m thinking about sending some of our close friends and our priest a blank, 3x5 card and asking them to share their favorite bible verse with him and to pray for him on his special day. I’ll then make a keepsake book for him out of the bible verses, and we’ll use each verse in a short ‘bible study’ throughout the year.

Elzee, that is a great idea. What a beautiful keepsake that will be.

This might sound ridicules but please be sure to let her sit down on her dress on the way to church. Don’t make her stand in the back of the family van grasping the back of your seat. Not only is it illegal to be without a seat belt on but it dangerous too. Besides she will always remember years later “that ‘mom’ was afraid I would get wrinkled before my first Holy Communion.” She will never let you live down.:o

Don’t worry, my van does not leave until everyone is buckled, no excuses! We don’t have far of a drive anyway. Thank you and God bless.
