A prominent central NJ pastor is doing a month-long series on Catholicism. See liquidchurch.com and bighairpreacher.com. You can listen to his messages at liquidchurch.com or on iTunes (search for ‘Liquid Church’).

How do Catholics respond to what he says? Does he misrepresent Catholic theology? He doesn’t put it in a good light, despite that he says he’s not out to “trash Catholics”.

Thanks.

I think the adjectives sum it up.

You don’t have to look very far, and I admit I did not look very far yet myself, to see that he is misrepresenting Catholic teaching.

The Sunday’s message, with a picture of “Catholic Questions” says “click here to learn about salvation based on faith vs. good works”. The implication is that when you listen to this, you will learn about how Catholics teach a works based salvation which of course we do not. We teach a salvation based on faith and works. Another way to put it, we teach a salvation as taught by the Bible and understood as such for over 2000 years.

I will look more into this and maybe post some more erroneous Catholic “facts” I find.

God Bless.

Don’t watch the Sunday’s message unless you want to hear one of the stupidest “Catholic” reprentatives I have ever seen. It really is a terrible representation of Catholic teaching and of course it would be as there are no Catholics present. It is also another exercise in protestant scripture quoting out of context and conveniently only reading scripture that appears to support their belief.

These poor souls are being mislead by a non-authoritative Catholic source. Sure he has a Catechism, but if he can selectively quote scripture to prove a point, he can do the same to the Catechism. We can only hope they have some invincible ignorance. We can also hope they see this and want to learn more about what we actually teach though I was apparently incorrect in my previous post. He was representing us as faith and works though I did not see him showing our defense of this.

I am at work so I can’t watch the entire thing. Maybe if someone watches it all they can let me know if he brings our scripture verses into light for his audience. He would then have to analyze them which I do not believe he would do, but I can have some hope. This is how he could accurately represent the Catholic position and anything less is just more of the same from protestants.

God Bless.

Try to correct him, and if he doesn’t listen to you, or anyone else, pray for him.

What is humorous is the reason that Karl Keating founded Catholic Answers was to provide Catholic answers.

Suggest you get a set of the Catholic Answers tracts. Or print out one or two. and mail them to the pastor in question.

It’s not worth getting excited over, or spending hours crafting a response, because Karl already did all that ;)👍 … but it is worth mailing something brief, relevant and pithy [been waiting for DECADES to use that word; ever since it came up in sophomore year in high school … terse but forceful. ]

Another option is to forward some of his info to apologist John Martignoni of Bible Christian Society and he will systematically dismantle the anti-catholic claims - he’ll even do it via email if the other pastor is willing to.

Actually pithy is tersely cogent; sorry, I’m putting my grammarian back in his bag now.

the Catholic who wants to defend against anti-Catholic teaching and bigotry will strive daily to live a holy, obedient, exemplary life in Christian charity, raise his children to do so, pray unceasingly for the bigots, and do all in his power, including and especially volunteering to help teach and hand on the Faith in its entirety to the next generation.

Liquidchurch has no interaction, no forums, and no way of refuting their polite bigotry. Bighairpreacher has nothing but FaceBook, which means if they don’t like what you say as a member of their group, you get deleted. You can send in emails, but they will probably be ignored and deleted. These wolves target our weakest members: fallen away Catholics who know little of their faith.

We can challenge Rev. Bighair to a debate on his misrepresentations, and spread it around on FaceBook (a time consuming project) how they refuse to engage us on a public forum. That’s all I can think of.

If anyone is interested in following up on this idea, email me.

I stand elucidated.

My source is Cliff Klavin, the ubiquitous mailman.

[When he was younger, I used to visualize him playing Jesus of Nazareth, particularly when Mary wanted him to break his schedule of public appearances and make wine at the Marriage Feast of Cana … “But, maaaa!” That would have been GREAT!]

Well, he’s lying; he is out to trash the Catholic Church.

What do you do about someone who deliberately bears false witness, especially when he is supposed to be a shepard of Christ flock? We pray for them!

Let us all pray for him and all like him… Lord, we pray that You have mercy on them and lead them to the Pillar and Foundation of Truth. Grant this Lord, for we ask it in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Well, the bighair pastor concluded his Catholic Questions series yesterday discussing the subject of transubstantiation. He mentions in the beginning that he was called to the carpet by a local priest (Fr. Brian) and that they met for 3 hours. After patronizing the priest he goes on to make fun of “Jesus getting stuck to the roof of his wife’s mouth” and more of his supposed comparing and contrasting of the view of the eucharist between evangelicals and Catholics. Worth watching for penenace though!

He initially does a good job describing what Catholics mean by the Eucharist based on his meeting with a local priest. But he then ridicules it with a story of his wife who had the Eucharist stuck to the top of her mouth when she was confirmed.

He then goes on to say that Scripture does not teach the literal meaning of the Eucharist at all. Mentions Nicodemus who made the mistake of literally interpreting Jesus’ words on rebirth. Presents Jesus as joking with Nicodemus for taking him literally (Come on!! I don’t mean it literally!!!). Jesus only said, do this in remembrance of me. Nowhere does he mention John 6, at least within the first 20 minutes of his presentation. I had to turn it off after that for lack of time.

He presents Christ as being resacrificed again, and again, and again. Never ending sacrifice. Redemption is continually accomplished in the sacrifice of the Eucharist. Nowhere does he mention that the Priest is representing the onetime sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

I would summarize it as an honest attempt to be fair to Catholicism, but it ends up like a boxing match with a punching bag. There is no one to throw a counterpunch. For example, if Tim, or Jimmy, or Karl or pretty much most people who post on this forum, were to have been able to defend the Catholic position, it would have been a very different presentation.

But I still give him credit for at least trying to be fair. I suppose one could make some of the same arguments about the Catholic Answers radio shows. They are not meant to be infomercials about other religions, but to help people learn and defend the Catholic faith. So we show why where we think other religions have gone wrong, while trying to me as respectful as possible.

God bless,
Ut

I went in with a neutral point of view and was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt to further Ecumenism. Almost immediately I got put off by what I call the “used car salesman” style of preaching - an over bearing confidence and an attitude of “I’m here to educate you” preaching approach. I also found it entertaining that a red-neck (sorry. ditching the polyester leisure suit for casual-cotton doesn’t fool anyone) would assume to talk down to his audience and project so much superiority and false objectivism.

I got really angry when I heard this guy crowing on about his ex-Catholic wife who at a mere age 7 was taught that Jesus hides in the wafer; then mocking us how “Jesus got stuck to the roof of her mouth” haha. I got a definate message that goes something like: “I got me a innocent and victimized Catholic girl to renounce her faith to be subordinate to me and my teachings”.

Anyway - the man is a phony and is trying to present himself as “Catholic friendly” to lure poorly catechized Catholics away from their faith in the same way he seduced his wife away from her faith. He is very ignorant of what Catholics really do believe. He completely ignored the apostle John’s verses about Eucharist and went out of his way to highlight the words “remembrance” in the last supper accounts. He also mi-stated Catholic belief and told his audience that we re-sacrifice Jesus everyday in mass – clueless about the re-presentation of the same eternal sacrifice and how that allocates grace across time and space by entering into that one same sacrifice.

His website goes out of its way to avoid any way to contact or leave messages. I found only one email link ( membership@liquidchurch.com) and sent him a message. I doubt it will get past his web administrator though. This man is fishing for tithing members to his new church to make a living off the gullible.

Nothing new here - same old mom-n-pop preachers trying to make a living peddling snake-oil and using anti-Catholic polemics - just in a new updated package.

God help these people who think they can profit by spreading the nonsense they do.

James
