How do we know that the Catholic Church is the continuation of Christ’s Church under the Pope? I really do we believe that the Church is True and contains the Truth, but what about the Orthodox claims that the Pope isn’t valid? The main argument seems to be that the bishop of Rome was a place more of honor rather than authority, but this seems wrong to me since the actual successor of St Peter would have a special authority like he did.

The Papal succession is the only continuous Office line that goes back two thousand years. When Judas killed himself, Peter said that his office was vacant and they had to replace him. If they had to replace Judas’ office, it is a foregone conclusion that Peter’s office had to be replaced when He died. And it continued on for two thousand years.

Personally I believe the separation of the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches was more political than theological. Great amounts of power and influence were at stake, and man’s sinful nature helped to split the Church that Christ built.

Hopefully sometime soon we will begin to see the fruits of what has been decades long work to build bridges between the Catholic Church and Orthodox Churches, and hopefully to our joining back into one Church again.

Becasue its true. Because he and everyone else says so because historians and tradition says so because it makes sense because we have faith its true becasue we grew up bleiveing it is true because we have absolutely no reason to beleive otherwise and because God says so and Jesus says so and because thats the way its been for 2000 years with all scrutiny falling apart under its establishment. For many reasons.

Look at it this way. First ask: is there a god? If you believe there is a god, is there only one or are their multiple gods? If you believe there is only one god, then throw out all polytheistic religions, or any religion that condones polytheism. This includes both Hinduism and Buddhism, and most other oriental religions.

Then we can begin to examine each of the monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Examine the Bible, find if it is consistent with itself in such a way that only God could have written it. When you understand how the Old and New Testament fit together like a key going into a lock, you will see that Judaism was a prelude to Christianity.

Once you believe that Christianity is true, then you examine the New Testament and the early Church closely. Consider it in light of the various Christian sects. Can essential Protestant doctrines be logically true? Once you come to the conclusion that it cannot be, then you must toss out Protestantism. Then you are left with Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Islam, and Mormonism.

Consider, does the New Testament speak of the Church fading away, or standing firm? Once you realized that Jesus permanently established His Church, you can throw out Islam and Mormonism. Then you look examine the Scriptural and historical evidence for the pope’s authority. You will see that it is there.

Then you know.

This, of course, is not a proof, but the map by which you construct a proof.

Well for starters Jesus said He would establish a church. He also said that He would remain with that church until the end of the age. He said that church would be protected from error by the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Church is the only church that hasbeen here for the 2,000 years since Christ and has not taught error. The Orthodox have taught error. Remember Nestorious, the heretic? He was the bishop of Contantinople. Okay?

Because of Matt. 16:18-19, the 200some continuous popes, and ultimately, by faith in Christ.
