How do we know if the pope is true or a heretic?

If a Pope should contradict a former Pope or Council - like Trent or Vatican I, would that Pope be a heretic? If so, would he cease to be a Catholic (even without a declaration by a council or later Pope but objectively speaking would he cease to be a Catholic - e.g. Anathematized like any other Catholic lay person?) and then not be Pope?

IF so, who decides whether a Pope or Council (like Vatican II) contradicts a previous Council (like Trent or Vatican I)? Where are the checks and balances if no one can question a new Pope or Council? Isn’t this a ‘loophole’ which can be used by say, Masons to lead good, loyal Catholics astray to an anti-Pope or anti-Council in the belief that they are obeying their Pope/Church?

OR would the Holy Spirit assure that no Pope would be elected if he were not a true Pope?
