How do we know people in heaven can hear us?

Could you please provide me with biblical support that people in heaven (not just saints or Mary) can hear our prayers?

I have searched these forums and found that there are generally 2 most commonly-referenced supports for this:

The problem I have with the so-often referenced revelation passage (saints offering prayers as bowls of incense) is that nowhere in that passage does it say that the bowls of incense are prayers of humans–just that they are saints’ prayers. This proves merely that saints can pray and not that they are actually hearing the prayers of humans.

Another passge which I found was one Fr. Serpa referenced: the plea of the rich man to Abraham. I don’t see how this in any way demonstrates that heavenly beings can hear the prayers of humans. Neither Abraham nor the rich man were in heaven in that parable (they were in hell, separated by the chasm) and further, Abraham said that he was unable to help the man.

Thank you.

HP,

You note that you’ve already seen Father Serpa’s reference to Luke 16:19-30. These links should give you many more references for the intercession of the saints. If you have any further questions or concerns that are not answered by these links, please contact Catholic Answers directly.
