How do we know that the Bible is reliable?

I’m thinking maybe you mean something along the lines of during WWII, when some people told a lie to the Nazis to protect the Jewish people from being caught and sent to death camps. They might have put their lives at risk and never recanted for this lie.

How about if we changed the word lie to hoax? Because if Jesus didn’t rise from the dead and the disciples stole the body and said differently, it is now a hoax. Why believe that and die for that?
You aren’t suggesting that men/women, not just one, but a group of them, that appear otherwise normal, would actually participate in a hoax, a known hoax–(because that is what we would be talking about here, isn’t it?), and choose torture and death and watch dozens, if not hundreds, of their close friends and family be tortured and die, or be rejected by them, and would willing be put to death for that hoax? And none them recanted? This isn’t worth it.

Am I missing something? I don’t get it.
 
In fact, we can tragically recall the events of Heaven’s Gate, in which one person, Marshall Applewhite became convinced there was a spaceship traveling behind the Hale-Bopp Comet. We all agree this man was delusional (he had a history of mental instability), yet was firmly convinced of an untruth. So convinced, he not only died for this belief, but managed to convince 37 others to die as well.

If you going to cut and paste from an atheist site, at least cite the website.
 
There seems to an overwhelming notion that is taken as fact amongst christians.

'No man will die for a lie"

or

“No man will die for a hoax”

Why do we believe this to be an Absolute Truth?

Here is an event that happened to me while I was in China.

I met an acquaintance that killed a woman.
He maintained his innocense all the way to the excecutioners firing block.

I asked him why he was willing to die for a lie.

He said because if I told the truth and admitted to killing the woman,I would be bring shame upon my mother and father. Which is the greater sin? Dishonoring my father and my mother or telling a lie?

Since lieing comes farther down the line, I had to concede his logic. Furthermore, divulging the truth would have saved his life, but it would have ruined his parents lives.

So to simply say a man could not possibly die for a lie or even a hoax is nothing more than unenlightened stupidity.

One cannot even comprehend the mind of one that would willingly die for something he actually knows is not true.

Culture plays a part.
Honor plays a part.
As joey said above, protecting the greater good of humankind plays a part.

Am I a Christian? Yes
Am I a Roman Catholic? Yes
Do I believe the Holy Book is Truthful? Yes.

Do I believe that man is not capable of dieing for a lie? Hell NO!
 
Interesting illustration to think about.

Some thoughts: Dying for honor by one person seems a little different than a group of people concocting a story about a resurrected man and knowing it to be wrong, and sticking by it even if they lost family friends and were tortured themselves and caused their family and friends to get tortured and killed. Also, if I remember correctly, they may have been allowed to keep their resurrected Jesus story if they would also include Roman emperor worship.

Again, if they were delusional, deceived or mistaken then they may die for the hoax—I think that is where Heavens’ Gate falls. I haven’t followed that story very closely, but I’m guessing that only Applewhite was privy to knowedge of the actual spaceship. The others were not witnesses, but just believers.
 
Sticking to the Bible Alone mentality, only one apostle died as a martyr.

oh, the moron factor is high. Stop stereotyping China. As general rule, you are right, you are not absolutely right. Some provinces are a little more lenient then the bigger cities of China.

Now if you want to get to the nitty gritty, you should cut off your fingers for pecking on a keyboard made in China…probability is very high that yours was made in China.
