okay…I am a devoted Catholic with an older cousin and a friend who like to argue with me about the faith. So I have decided to post some of their questions (and some of mine as well) here…hoping to get a reply. I talked to my parish priest and he told me the best thing to do is not to just say some random answer off the top of my head that I think may be right, but to do some research, and he suggested this website. Let me tell you, I try to give good answers but they want, well, hard proof.
So here is one question: How do you know that the Catholic faith and teachings are true if you are being taught by other people, not God. (So really he is saying why do I believe in God)
He also said that the only way to know would be if God came and told me… -_-

I did try to answer but does anyone else have an opinion of what I should say!!! Thanks and God bless…

God gave us a Church and we teach things the same way the Apostles did things through apostolic succession if it was fake or wrong it wouldn’t have lasted 2000 years and lets be serious either the Church is an organizational genius and/ or divine. The Church has outlasted the Roman, Ottoman, Byzantine, British empires and the dark ages nothing else has survived.

God did come and tell us. And we told each other and wrote down what He said. He Incarnated, shared the burdens of being human, and then He died for us. He also started a church while He was here. Guess which one?

Catholicism has been around for long periods of time , like Judism and Muslim faith. Like the Dalia Lama. So everyone believes they have ultimate truth.

For my money I say bet on the Trinity and we can disagree on secondary issues and live in peace. Baptists ,Catholic, lutherans have far more in common than they don’t.

I believe “one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church” (as said in the nicene creed during mass)…

Yup. That’s us. (And the other catholic rites.) And we’ve retained the truths God gave us in His Incarnation, Death and Resurrection for over 2000 years. (Hence, the apostolic part…)

Thank you everyone for your answers…they really help!!!

Rig Veda’s been around since 1700–1100 BCE. The length of time something’s been around (especially when you’re dealing with religion) does not **in any way **constitute proof of validity. I mean, Judaism predates Catholicism by a long shot, so by your logic, Judaism would be the more valid faith.

But when God (Jesus) became man…he created one universal church (hence the name Catholic )

Hmmm…have you asked your cousin and friend if they know where they got the Bible from? Ask thsem also why they believe the Bible is the word of God?

And where does Mark claim authorship of the Gospel of Mark? Where does Mark claim authorship of the Gospel? How do they know it is the right Mark and not just anyone named Mark who wrote it?

Here is the answer…and for your knowledge too…catholicapologetics.info/apologetics/protestantism/wbible.htm

Ask them als if they believe everthing their pastor tells them?

Then cite the example of St. Paul, and see if they follow his biblical example of being called and sent…with the following:

In Gal 2, v2…Paul is told to submit to the leaders (Apostles) in Jerusalem…ask them if their pastor have followed this same example…Who assured their pastor that what he is teaching is from the Apostles…same as St. Paul.

This also fulfills 1John4, v6…so ask how their pastor fulfills 1john 4:6?

In Acts 13, Paul is ordained prior to being sent…so ask them who ordained their pastor and can he trace the one who ordained their pastor back to the Apostles.

Jesus gave the authority to teach in His name to the Apostles (Matthew 10:20; Luke 10:1; Luke 10:16), with Peter having the preeminent position among them (Matthew 16:17-19), and promised that the Holy Spirit would protect them from ever teaching error (John 14:16-18, 26; 15:26; 16:13; 17:17-19; Luke 21:33). He said that they would remember everything Jesus taught them. (John 14:16-18, 26; Luke 21:33). He further promised that the fruit that the Apostles bore (i.e., the Bishops they appointed and the Church that He built on them (Ephesians 2:19-22)) would remain faithful (John 15:16). The Apostles in turn taught (again, without error) that they had the authority to pass that office on to their successors (Acts 1:20,26; Rom 13:1-2; Heb. 13:17; 1 Tim 1:3; 2 Tim 2:2; 2 Pet. 1:16–21, 3:2; 1 Cor 3:9-11; Jude 8, 10-11 (ref. to Num 16). And the Early Church Fathers, the men who learned the faith directly from the Apostles, believed that as well.

So, based on the word of Christ, we can know that the teaching authority of the Church is protected by God from ever teaching false doctrine as being infallibly true and binding on all believers.

You often need to respond to questions with other questions instead of with answers. For example, how does one know ANY teaching is true? What does it even MEAN for a teaching to be true? Etc, etc.

The point being, don’t put yourself in the box, with them asking all the questions and you having to provide all the answers.

Another example - if an atheist asks “how do you know God created the universe” you can level the playing field by asking them how they know the universe created, or accounts for, or caused/causes, itself (which it would have to do if God did not create it).

Scripture Catholic is a good resource, too: scripturecatholic.com/

Catholicism is a revealed Religion.

He came pre-announced!

The Hebrew Scriptures prophesied of Him to come.

He, (God) con-decended to become man and in doing so fulfills prophesies in the Hebrew Scriptures!

God has revealed Himself in the Person of Jesus Christ.

He established a social order(The Catholic Church) to proclaim this truth!

This Social Order ( the Catholic Church) has been doing this infallibly for 2000 years

The Scriptures bear witness of this!

Miracles also show that God is still with us!

The answers that use scripture to support our belief that all Catholic teachings are true begs the question of how do we know scripture is true? It is circular reasoning to use scripture as nowhere does God give us a list of the books of scripture - either within scripture or outside of scripture. After all scripture as we have it today was not defined until the 390’s by the Church and how do we know this teaching is correct? So why did the faithful prior to 390 AD believe the Church teachings were without error? This leads to first thing to ALWAYS remember is that Christianity (the Catholic Church) does NOT come from one’s personal guesswork on bible verses. If God intended Christianity to sprout from scripture then there would only be one church not the thousands we have today. And that’s assuming the canon of the bible would have been defned on Pentecost Sunday, not in the 390’s. The issue is that the bible does not interpret itself nor does it force its explanation on anyone. Plus illiteracy was the norm until a few centuries ago and is even still widespread today. The inadequacy of scripture was recognized by the founder of modern day protestantism, ex-Catholic priest Martin Luther, which is why he wrote two catechisms to teach his personal version of what “faith” means, even though he had no authority from God to do so.

The bible is a narrative of salvation history (how God has intervened in history to save man), it is not a catechism. Official Catholic catechisms (the Roman catechism & the Catechism of the Catholic Church) teach in an organic and systematic the whole Catholic faith which is the Gospel the Apostles first taught 2,000 years ago. The bible does not teach the whole Catholic faith, though it can attest to and nourish the teachings of the faith which are found in summary form in the either of the two catechisms just mentioned. The Gospel, the oral word of God taught by the Apostles and continued to this day by the Pope and the few bishops in union with him, and the bible, the written word of God, are distinct, different, yet they flow from the same source, the Holy Spirit.
We know the teachings are true because God has revealed them to us and he can neither deceive nor be deceived. Jesus, a historical person of the 1st century, claimed to be divine and worked public miracles before thousands to validate that claim. He taught the most beautiful teachings in world history, no others come even close to his. He prophesied his death, rose from the dead and appeared before hundreds of his followers after his death. Who else in history has done that? (continued)

All founders of other religions (Islam, Buddhism, Mormon-ism, Hindus, Protestant dominations, etc) were men. NONE of them were able to perform miracles and thus validate their position as being sent by God to start a new religion much less as men worthy of any sort of credibility. None of them died for your sins or even suffered slightly for you. Only Jesus died for your sins so that you would know how to live (by following the teachings of the Church) and thus be happy and at peace regardless of personal circumstances. Only he founded God’s church which gives us the sacraments for the grace, that is the ability, to obey the commandments and follow Church teachings.
So people back in the first century knew that Jesus lived, was tortured to death and then an organization, the Catholic Church, with teachings on what to believe and how to live, that is, doctrine, appeared shortly after. The people who believed this oral word of God, that is the Gospel, (Mk 16:15-16) and were baptized were saved from their sins, that is, freed from the slavery to sin. Slavery to sin leads to misery, illness, ugliness, unnecessary suffering and often premature death. This is why Jesus came to earth, to ransom us from bondage to sin which leads to unhappiness (…the son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, to give his life as a ransom for the many). When we are free from sin we can then love God and our neighbor which leads to happiness and joy.
By practicing the faith the believers realized that when they followed the teachings of the ordinary and extra-ordinary magisterium (the pope and bishops in union with him) they were happy and society as a whole was better off. The poor and sick were taken care of, hospitals & orphanages founded, there was peace. Through the ages there has not been one contradiction in teaching. Atheists & theologians have claimed errors for centuries but so far no one has found one contradiction in Church teaching. That is because all teachings come from God who created us out of love and has given us the Church so we would know how to live (the light of Christ), be happy and at death receive eternal salvation in heaven. Would a loving father or mother tell his four year old to go play in the street? Of course not. It is the same with God our Father. Everything he gives us is for our own good and happiness.
Further proof what the Church teaches is true is by observing those who don’t follow the teachings. Many of them live lives of desperation, angry, unforgiving, gluttonous, miserable, enslaved to sex & have sexually transmitted diseases (know of any married couples who are faithful to each other with a STD?), in prison, drug addicts, in short they are enslaved to sin and can’t get out. The only way out is by following the teachings of the Catholic Church, which includes receiving the sacraments which will give them the grace (the ability) to change their lives. A prisoner (Russell Ford) in an Alabama state prison has been involved in the conversion of over 200 prisoners. Many have left after serving their time and only two (02) are recidivists. They say their daily prayers and go to Mass which gives them the grace to lead a normal, felony free life. No other religion or program has a 2% recidivism rate. I know someone in prison ministry who said the Protestant/Catholic ratio in town (about 20,000) is 50/50. Yet the Protestant prisoners number about 70%. Why is that? It is due to their teaching which states just accept Jesus as your Lord & Saviour & you will be “saved”. One does not have to obey the commandments or receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist for the grace to help us obey the commandments. The result is that Protestantism leads to societal decay and disorder. This is how we know that everything God teaches us in the Catholic Church is true, by the effect it has on us.

The best site I know of is biblechristiansociety.com/home.php.
It is John Martignoni’s apologetics site specifically for defending the faith. Another good one is found.catholic-convert.com

Knowing how erroneous those heresies are (especially Protestantism and Calvinism) really helps me strengthen the faith in Catholicism and the Church!

Truth should stand on its own. Truth doesn’t become more true because others are false. The truth can prove itself. To know if the Church is true, one has to really go way back and see what is taught from Day 1 and how is the faith practiced. There must be consistency and continuity. What is not consistent from the time of the Apostles is an innovation, therefore is false.

I agree. But it helps! Haha!
