How do we know what Jesus said when away from the Apostles?

Hello,

I am pretty strong in the faith but not theology. The other day I had a discussion with a non believer and he brought up a point I could not answer. He asked “how do we know what Jesus said when no one was around him to record it?” for example when Jesus was praying in the garden alone. Please help me out with this question
 
Hi,

The Apostles were at the garden and were well aware that they had fallen asleep. But Jesus could easily have given them that information after His resurrection. The New Testament is the result of recollections that were orally transmitted to the authors or experiences that the authors had themselves.
