How exactly do we participate in the sins of others? If I know that someone is doing something immoral and I do not say anything, am I culpable for that sin? Recently two friends of mine moved in together ( a man and a woman) and they are unmarried and not living chastely. What is my obligation to them? I fear that if I say anything the only thing it would do would break up our already strained friendship. Is prayer enough? Also, when I was 21 I had a friend who was 18 and we used to go to the bars together because he had found an I.D. from someone who was 21. Did I participate in his sin by going with him and not hindering him? At the time I did not consider underage drinking to be immoral, because I figured if he was old enough to vote or join the military he should be old enough to have an occasional beer. Thank you for your help.

Really what this boils down to is quite simple…examples are best.

Lets say that you give someone a nude magazine - you just gave them an opportunity to not only lust, but possibly engage in self-abuse.

Lets say that you give alcholol to a friend and the friend is drunk, then you do nothing to stop the friend from driving while drunk.

Or, two kids in a store and one decides to steal and urge the other to steal.

I don’t believe that underage drinking is a sin in and of itself. Using the false ID would be.

As for the friends who are co-habiting, you said it was already a strained relationship. Why? Could it be strained because they know what they are doing and that they are embarassed that you also know? I think that I would have to go on record that I were against there living together, tell them the foundation of why I believe that it is wrong (because God said so) and tell them that as long as they remain in that sinful state I have to exclude myself from seeing them. Tell them that you will pray for them and do so.

God Bless!
