How do we reconcile the difference between the Old and New Testament God?

How do we reconcile the difference between such a wrathful God of the New Testament and such a loving and merciful God of the new. Is this based on the time in which the events were recorded or a deeper understanding of God after he revealed himself to us in Christ.
