So I just watched this video and it made me wonder: as practicing Catholics what must we do to respond to this crisis?

I will say that part of the problem might be that people might have put too much faith into fallible men rather than the infallible teachings of the Church. But one would have to be ignorant to claim that this scandal hasn’t just caused scandal but perhaps ruined people’s spiritual lives.

So how do we respond to this? How do we heal the wounds?

Okay I worded this strangely, but what I meant to say was that it would be ignorant to say that this scandal only hurt the Church’s reputation. It would be more correct to say that it has even hurt people’s spiritual lives.

yes but i cant understand whether or not the abuse cases would matter to a person who fully understands the faith. it causes pressure on the lapses and people who dont fully understand the faith from the media but i dont take it Too seriously, it is serious but i dont think too much about it

The Church has already been responding to the abuse crisis in many ways, for example requiring in my area Virtus training for anyone dealing with children, changing seminary entrance rules, the John Jay study, and other things. One thing to keep in mind is that while most of the reporting of the abuse is recent, most of the actual abuse occurred several decades ago. In many of the abuse cases recently reported, we are looking into the past, not the present. That does not excuse egregious behavior, but the gravest cases seem to have occurred some time ago.
