Thank you Wesrock. Care to expand on that for me?

Thank you Deacon Christopher, my faith is rock solid. I had a very deep encounter with God and conversion experience many decades ago and have been faithful ever since. I am not talking about getting into heated discussions but when non-Christians have genuine questions I want to be able to answer them accurately in words they can understand. These are people who, as you say, don’t know God yet so they are highly unlikely to pick up a bible or catechism. Instead they are asking me so I want to do my best to answer.

I find it is not uncommon that the image of God they think we believe in is not accurate. So I want to be able to correct, kindly, and use straightforward non-religious language to explain.

Before I was a Christian the following meant nothing to me. I had never heard these words:
Holy Spirit
Trinity
Eucharist
Communion
Sacrament

Just to give you an idea and there are plenty more! So I appreciate where atheists are coming from.

Thank you Wesrock, that was really helpful. Maybe God as depicted in classical Western art can throw people off. I genuinely thought when I was an atheist that Christians believed God was a old white guy with a flowing beard in a nightdress.

Thank you everyone and I would love more (name removed by moderator)ut. I hope you understand that I am not attempting to redefine or change anything but accurately convey who God is in our theology. So someone says “I just can’t believe in a God” because of what they THINK we are saying He is. Of course they always say “and who made God?” which to my mind is a dead giveaway that they don’t understand or know our theology because they are seeing God as another created being rather than the First Cause and the inexplicable source of being.

I find people actually really enjoy these discussions because atheists and others don’t have the opportunity for asking these questions very often.
