I thought as Catholics we didn’t take things literally?

If the Bishop is named John Jones,

On the envelope containing a letter you write:

“The Right Reverend John Jones”.

And when he is talking to you , you say,

“Bishop Jones”.

If you can’t remember

When talking, you can’t go wrong with:

“Reverend Father Jones”. ( I once addressed a letter to my Bishop this way and never heard a word about it. “Reverend Bishop”.

Right Reverend John Jones

if talking.

Bishop Jones

( if you forget, Reverend Father will be accepted)

(Arch)bishop = Your Excellency XYZ

Cardinal = Your Eminence XYZ

(Most bishops are “Most Reverend”, not “Right Reverend” – there is a distinction.)

depends on whether you are shipping him USPS, FedEx or UPS. I just call him “Bishop”.

Is your excellency for a Bishop as well as an ArchBishop?

I think I’ve heard that “Right Reverend” is how one would ordinarily address a bishop in the UK.

An ArchBishop may also be referred to as “Your Grace”

This is far more common in UK\Ireland than the US, but the honorific still applies.

Yes you are correct; a Bishop in the U.K is addressed as Right Reverend and a Very Reverend is the Dean of a Cathederal.

We tend to address a Bishop in Wales as ‘Your Grace’ and the Archbishop as ‘Your Excellency’

Yours in the Spirit

Pious

Addressing him isn’t the problem, shipping is a WHOLE different story.

The great American athlete Jim Thorp won several gold medals at the Olympics in Sweeden.

When he was introduced to the King of Sweeden, he said:

" How are you doing, Mr. King?" The king laughed that he was a bit tired.
