How do you answer an atheist asking you Why did God permit the earthquake in Japan?

God gave free will to people. Careless greedy people abused their free choice, made global warming, the water in the arctic areas melted, a balance of the Earth is shaken.

God expect us to start toi think about the consequences of our votes.

I haven’t really heard that theory, even on the Leftist-Liberal “News” stations. However, I implore you to explain the explosion at Vesuvius? Or even other catastrophes that have shaken the world BEFORE Man began his drilling and caused the Arctic to melt.

Any way, back on topic, I have combated plenty of Atheists who say that God cannot exist because bad things happen. How can people be good, and show charity, mercy, etc. if bad things don’t happen?

Ask him why science was unable to prevent it. 😉

Seriously though, I’m not sure that I would answer him unless it was a serious question looking for a theologically sound answer that he is interested in pondering. Usually when ‘athiests’ ask these kinds of questions, they’re not really asking anything. It is an accusation against which, in their minds, there is no possible right answer.

Being good is not charity or mercy only. The first commandment is to love God with all of your heart. Also: in the heaven bad things do not happen, and everyone is good.

I read that the (increased number of) earthquakes are consequence of the global warning from Mr Gore some 20 years ago. Americans voted him out of the office for lip service or the other party. Before him learned similar theories (about the shake of balance) from my father 60 years ago.

Well, first off, I said etc. So I did not say (or even imply) that charity and mercy are the only qualities of “good”. I was not about to name every virtuous act in the book.

Also, what do you call the fallen Angels? Good? That happened in Heaven (if I understand correctly).

Also, Vesuvius was a couple thousand years ago, I think.

While I do accept that global warming is a real threat and will cause catastrophic change in climate, it is really not responsible for earthquakes - Mr Gore has it very wrong if that’s what he’s saying. Earthquakes are caused by the movement of the earth’s tectonic plates against each other: in this last event the Pacific plate pushing under the neighbouring plate.

Atheist rejection of God is almost always predicated on the ballooning of trivia into monumental problems that don’t actually exist. Is it any surprise that God’s system, which obeys the laws of physics, is subject to those very laws 99% of the time? Why would God have created universal laws of gravitation and other natural principles if He was going to ignore them? Our Lord has abjured His total control over physical space for some reason, except at times when He deems it absolutely necessary for the course of history to shift physical laws around. Ask your friend:

“Can you blame the creator of a freely-developing computer program when expected changes in the program occur? Would you rather the designer had simply never pressed the ‘power’ button?”

👍

That is what we call in scholastic debate a “straw man” question. Most nonbelievers who ask you “why did God allow [insert natural disaster here]” are doing it because they know there is no way to answer that. We are not God. And natural disasters have been around since the beginning of time. Like death, it’s…natural.

Frankly I would answer that I don’t know why God allowed the earthquake anymore than I know why he allowed the sun to rise and warm us all in its glow or the earth to bring forth fruit or why He allowed me to be born…

Then I would go on to say that, since life does not end at physical death I don’t worry to much about God’s mechanisms. God has his reasons, like providing opportunities for people to come to believe, to grow in charity, and to work out their salvation…
…Or Not ( in the case of the Atheist) 🤷

James

Yeah, right. I suppose greedy people are responsible for Mars’ global warming too?

Last I checked, this “climate change” has nothing to do with tectonic plate movement.

why do people blame bad stuff on God.

I thought only Satan was responsible for bad stuff like that? thats the way they taught us in ccd 🤷

First, God does have control of everything, so people tend to see that everything good as well as everything bad comes from God.

Second, Satan naturally doesn’t have any power. He’s a deceiver, but he can’t cause any events. He can make us believe something else so that us in our own power would help him accomplish his objectives. Take for example Adam. Satan didn’t make Adam eat the fruit, Adam did that on his own free will. He just convinced Adam that eating the fruit will make him like God. But at that point, Adam was already in the image and likeness of God. So its all about deceiving.

Now, we must realize that God sees things way differently that we see things. This earthquake may be seen as bad right here and now, but it may be serving a greater purpose to the planet and the people of future generations. We just don’t know that yet today. So who are we to say that its as bad as we think it is?

The world as we know it is a result of consequences of The Fall. God lets these consequences play out. To ask why goes to “the problem of suffering”. Why does God allow suffering? There are many good books that have been written on the subject, but whatever the reason, the important thing to know is this: when we offer our sufferings to God, good will come out of evil. The greatest example of this is the suffering and death of Jesus. Out of His sacrifice, death was defeated. Love conquers all.

And so, out of the pain of all that has happened and is still happening in Japan, we need to pray for them and work together to recover from this disaster. God will be with us to help us in our struggles.

Even if there were no life on Earth, there would have been an earthquake and tsunami in that given place at that given time. Let him stress his mind for a while, why should you? 😉

Atheists interpretation of God and scripture is so narrow and literal.

The falling of the angles was before they get to the heaven: being members of the triumphant Church. That was their test. In the heaven there is no evil.

As for the Vesuvius our world is statistical, not absolute. The irresponsible votes based on lip service are not the reason of every bad things, only increased the possibility of bad things. Think. The Earth has a delicate balance and our irresponsibility broke this balance.

God gave you intellect to think, not to listen to the Fox News. Think about the delicate tectonic balance and the fact that the arctic ice melted, loosened the overall balance. The Earth is dynamic, rotates. Why the plates move against each other? Not every earthquake is coming from the results of the global warning, only the increasing number of the earthquakes.

May be it is not too late to vote responsibly, not for lip service.
