Looking at this in context of Matt 7:1-5 and 7:7-29 would indicate that those who do not repent are to be separated from us privately and publicly (Church life) lest they lead those around them to perdition. This would indicate a less than orthodox understanding of doctrine is contrary to the revealed word of God.

Don’t let those who subvert the Gospel subvert the truth in you. In daily life, I think that this and Titus 3:10 makes it clear “A man that is a heretic, after the first and second admonition, avoid”.

This calls for wisdom. This teaching is related to this:

He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.” (Matthew 13:11)

So don’t give God’s secrets to the unbelievers. If you don’t know any of His secrets… now you do!

Ver. 6. Give not that which is holy, or holy things, (as in the Greek) to dogs; i.e. to scandalous libertines, or infidels, who are not worthy to partake of divine mysteries and sacraments, who sacrilegiously abuse them, and trample them under their feet, as hogs do pearls. (Witham) — The sacred mysteries should not be given to those that are not properly instructed in the sublime nature of them; nor should we hold any communication of religion with those that are enemies to the truths of Christ, which they tread under their feet and treat contemptuously, and will be so far from having any more friendship for you on account of such a criminal complaisance, that it is more probable they will betray you and turn against you. (Haydock)

I took the liberty of highlighting the important words in this excerpt. I wholeheartedly agree with this excerpt from the Haydock Bible Commentary

Personally, to myself, it means do not give those that do not believe and have no intention or ability to do so anything sacred, such as the sacraments. And do not give your most precious posession, like your soul, to those that may turn you away from God.

Basically today, I see it as: don’t listen to the secular world. They can’t and won’t understand what is holy, important, and what truly matters. They already take what we deem sacred and trample it and consider it foolish. They downplay our beliefs and try to make them look dirty and unworthy. Just look at national news. One news channel in particular, but it wouldn’t be proper to mention which one…

Pigs will recognize truth (pearls) in wisdom you give them and use them ( put them underfoot) as a means to bring about their own ends. (trample you with them)
