In 1 Corinthians 6:16 it says “He who unites himself with a prostitute becomes one with her”. I recently read an article that said “When you engage in premarital sex, even if you never see that individual again you will always be connected in some form. In many ways you will always be committing adultery against your first sexual partner, even after you are married to your supposed true love.”

I am a virgin and am considering marrying a man who has in the past engaged in premarital sex with multiple women. He has since then had a conversion, been to confession and for several years has led a chaste and holy life and intends to continue doing so. Our relationship is chaste and holy and we continue to help each other grow in holiness. Everything points to the fact that a marriage between us would be in accordance with Gods will. But if he is in God’s eyes spiritually (or somehow) joined to the other women it seems like that isn’t possible. I am tired of shedding tears over this and would like to have it resolved. Opinions would not be helpful to me. I would like to know the Catholic Church’s teaching on this and have not been able to find any answers. PLEASE help!

Hi,

St. Paul was emphasizing the fact that we are not just spirits. Our bodies are us as well and contribute to our spiritual life. While a man who has sexual relations with a prostitute is one with her in the act, there is no commitment and certainly no sacrament uniting them thereafter.

The article you read sounds like a Protestant fundamentalist wrote it. It certainly does not reflect Catholic Church teaching. If the man has repented and received absolution, he is completely free from that sinful act.
