How do you clean a shirt stained with precious blood?

A friend of mine noticed a little spot of wine on his shirt on the way home from church on Sunday. He is unsure as to what to do. He has the shirt wrapped up in a plastic bag until he knows what to do for sure. How should he clean his shirt?
