I’ve been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and Xanax works wonders! But I think that my getting off the Internet, including Facebook and CAF, and using the time for contemplative prayer instead is what I need to work on next!

Trust in God. NOTHING happens without God ordaining or allowing it. I trust he has a plan for me. It may involve a cross to carry, but I know the Holy Spirit will guide me. And we only have to take one step at a time. One day at a time. One moment at a time.

God Bless You.

I’ve made myself so nervous before that I felt sick to my stomach. Nothing seems to help.
I can relate. I frequently call out to your Mother, the Virgin Mary, and to Jesus. I get some exercise each day. (If I don’t, the anxiety increases a lot).

I try to remember to breath, and to take care of myself generally.

Using healthy distractions, such as music, good videos, or anything harmless.

When get triggered, I write down what was the triggering event. Then what my thoughts are (usually distorted thoughts). Then I write down new more balanced thoughts.

You’re in my prayers. God Bless. --Pat

A lot of anxiety is over things we can’t control. This can be past or future events. It can be unlikely events. A part of experiencing relief is accepting our lack of control. This is where putting out trust in a God can be so helpful. It is in a real sense accepting reality.

There are mental techniques that can be helpful for anxiety but physical activity can be also be helpful.
Cut out or severely reduce TV.
Cut out or severely reduce radio, especially talk radio.
Cut out or severely reduce watching or listening to the news.
Cut out or severely reduce facebook or twitter.
Start your day off with prayer, NOT THE NEWS!
This! News is by nature about shocking you or otherwise working you up. TV is the worst because it adds lots of noise and multiple and flashing images. The reality is knowing most news has zero impact on your daily life and there is nothing you will change as a result of knowing it. The news also tends to focus you on the things most out of your control. Your impact is very local i.e family, friends, colleagues and parishioners.

This is a tool which definitely has its place. Just be very careful with it. It is habit forming and can be difficult to stop if you take daily and at large dosages.

Firstly I’d like to offer that by far most of the info in this thread on ways to deal with anxiety are well worth using. Secondly I’d like to offer that using alcohol as a way to deal with anxiety being a slippery slope is an understatement. I’ve been that route to deal with anxiety, depression etc… and though I thought I was being responsible or moderate I was not. Fortunately I was able to let it go before it went too far, but I did see myself slipping.
My father was an alcoholic and died from it. Though not diagnosed with anxiety I suspect that was an issue of his whether caused by the alcohol or using the alcohol to treat it I can’t say.
I had a brother-in-law diagnosed with anxiety who used alcohol to numb himself to it. He too died from his disease.
I have a sister-in-law (his sister) also diagnosed with anxiety among other issues that is an alcoholic and required a liver transplant several years ago. The transplant has been successful and she now deals with her issues without the use of alcohol.
These are my views from what I’ve experienced and seen and strongly encourage anyone that uses alcohol for the purpose of easing mental or even physical issues to please find an alternative. As read on this thread there are so many healthier ways to deal with things that are not “slippery slopes”. Be well-stay safe.
