I have had an array of cheap shots directed at the Catholic Church through out the last few years, I was wondering how everyone deals with the frustration and anger???
I know that I should deal with people with charity, but its hard sometimes. What do you do????

I really don’t have any sound advice to you, but let me give you a nice quote on the bumper sticker of my Deacon.

“I’m just thankful for the thousands of GOOD Priests out there”. (paraphrased).

People are going to think what they want to think, and it is rarely possible to instantly change the mind of someone who wants to see whatever it is that they have decided. Invite some of these folks to Mass sometime to see for themselves how bad the church is. I think they might be surprised.

Just ask them, in charity, what positive benefit they expect that their comment will bring about.

That’s a very good strategy.

People attack the Catholic Church because they feel inferior or jealous. You should couch your responses with that in mind.

a wise old sage once told me
“everyone likes to take shots at the winning team.”

You’re Catholic, you’re on the winning team, so to speak… so i almost expect those jabs to come from the also rans…

Boxer Dog,

I don’t know how spiritual or Christian or charitable this is, but I take comfort in the doctrine of Purgatory. Justice will be done, and it is not up to us generally to do it.

I look at 'em as if they have three heads and laugh. Depending on the subject matter (Mary, confession, purgatory, saints, statues, Bible) I look 'em in the eye and say: “I don’t know where in the world people get all these crazy ideas about the Catholic Church.” That’s about all most of 'em can take, since they’re used to Catholics cringing, being lost for words, and crawling away.

Then I’ll ask, in my brightest, friendliest tone, “Do you want to know where in Scripture we get that?” I don’t wait for an answer but launch right into my 45-second apologetic, followed by, “See? It’s all right there in the Bible!”

They’re usually so shocked that a Catholic has anything resembling a non-defensive, scripturally based position that THEY are the ones lost for words.

Unfortunately, when they encounter a Catholic with a fast mouth and a quick trigger-finger on Scripture, they don’t come back at you again. Shucks!

I usually reply to these kinds of things with an explanation pertaining to whatever it is that they are targeting with their cheap shot. If this doesn’t help, I will sometimes remind them of Matthew 10:24-25 and tell them that I am proud to be Catholic because Jesus tells us that:

“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master; it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Be-elzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.”

While it can be terribly aggravating to hear people take cheap shots, we can certainly take consolation in the sufferings of our Savior and unite ourselves to his cross.

You are so correct so always allow them room to come back, it is what they actually want and thus the “hate”

This was a very comforting scripture. Thank you!

Call them my friends, remind them that they are professing to Christians here so charity is a must, ad hominems are a logical fallacy…

A cheap shot is a cheap shot, so handle it as charitably as you are able. But be careful not to assume that all disagreement with Catholic teaching is a cheap shot or is derived from an inferiority complex.

Good to note, brother.

without me getting cranky with people who love to take pot shots at our faith, i usually just turn away from them, because if i don’t i open myself up to getting mouthy with them. i will defend the church with all that iam, and i have done it. i prefer to deal charitably, and if i cannot do that, i usually just hang up the phone if iam on it when it happens, or i walk away, or if its in a post, i just ignore it, otherwise i would snarl at them. i do not like snarling believe me.

Hey BD,
Can you give me some examples of what is said, because often I find that addressing them with facts usually shuts them up.
Pax tecum,

Pax tecum,
COULD IT BE?

Your post isn’t in dark blue!
I need to learn some of those facts.

I sometimes defend the Church if it’s family or friends, but sometimes, I just stay silent…and walk out of the room. It depends…but, I always remember Christ’s message to His followers…“The world will hate you, because it hated me first.” Sobering words…but, ominous of what was to come for the future.
When I see cheap shots from the media…I pray for those people who are misinformed, and mean. Mean people are usually mean, because they are hurting. It’s taken many years of praying for my own soul, to be able to pray for lost souls. I was a lost soul once…I’d like to believe someone was praying for me.

Hope that helps.:gopray:

I ignore the personal insult and pretend that they asked me an interesting question about a favorite subject of mine. Then I answer the question as helpfuly as I can. Being able to talk religion is a rare gift in this day and age so there’s no sense in squandering it.

Though I am protestant I know what you are talking about. I get cheap shots thrown at me now and then… How do I handle it… with a grain of salt. I try to put myself in their shoes to figure out why they would say it… They could have been taught these things growing up so by cutting back at them I do not reflect the image that I want to portray in order to change their mind. And then I pray for them and their hearts. Only God knows where their hearts are. Yes, I do get angry sometimes and lash out but that never works. It only gives them fuel. Talk it out with them if you can, pray, and lead by example to hush those lies they have grown to accept.

And remember… people tend to attack what they do not understand. If you turn the other cheek it may just help them to learn and calm down! 🙂

Oh, and don’t take it personal… Usually it isn’t against YOU it is to cover their own insecurities…
