People who make such generalized unjust charges need to be jolted into understanding just how offensive it is to Catholics to hear all – or even most – priests unfairly maligned for the criminal and immoral actions of a few. I recommend saying in a stiff, no-nonsense voice, “That’s my father you’re talking about!” If the person backs down and apologizes, you can then offer him information such as that which you can find in the links below. If he does not back down or if the mockery continues, feel free to silently turn away and leave him.
