How do you define "a Disciple of Christ"?

The sermon at the church I attend this past Sunday was on “what/who is a disciple?” It got me curious as to how folks on this board would answer that question.

I suspect it will be different from what I heard in the Sunday sermon.
 
Well, I would say that to be a disciple of Christ, we must follow Luke 9:23, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” We must do the will of God for our lives and not our own, selfish wills. “Thy will be done” type thing.
 
I would say that a disciple of Christ is anybody who believes that Jesus is the Christ, wants to learn from Christ, wants to obey Christ. Does not matter what denomination, so he or she might be for example Catholic, or Orthodox, or Lutheran, or Baptist, or Trinitarian Pentecostal, or Oneness Pentecostal, or Jehovah’s Witness, or Seventh Day Adventist, or Mormon, or Living Church of God member, or Iglesia ni Cristo member, or Revival Centres Church member, or Amish, etc., or non-denominational, as long as he or she believes that Jesus is indeed the Christ, wants to learn from Christ, wants to obey Christ, then he or she is a disciple of Christ. I would say that this would not include for example Muslims or Baha’is, since they believe that some of Christ’s commandments are no longer valid for today, have been superseded by new commandments. So at most one could argue they want to obey Christ, only in terms as they believe Christ approves of commandments that he believes have superseded his own commandments.

A Disciple is a student/follower of Christ.
 
A disciple is someone who listens to Mary when she says to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you”. Being Jesus’ disciple involves sacrifice. Part of that sacrifice is in giving away our material goods- when we have two coats, giving one to one who has none. Another part of that is in accepting His “hard sayings”, not just what doesn’t offend our modern sensibilities.
 
Reminds me of some Christians who refuse the title Christian, but “Follower of Christ”. Like, that’s literally what it means.

Those are the answers I was expecting but they differ somewhat from what was in the sermon I listed to on Sunday.
 
A disciple of Christ is one who is a student, friend and brother of Christ. One who imitates Christ, in suffering, in praying, in loving, in forgiving, in following God’s will at all times.

I would hope the number of differences would compare to the number of parts of a body.

My difinition will always include the word “obedience”.

Etym. Latin discipulus , pupil, follower.

The Church.
 
A disciple of Jesus is someone who follows and learns from Him by leaving their old life behind, at least spiritually. Who they are and what they do is affected by this discipleship. Disciples, at once leave their nets, and, immediately leave their boat, in this call. Their schedules are changed, their world view is changed, and their relationships are changed.

To be a disciple of Christ is not to be a follower of Christ .

It is to be in Christ .

It is to be a new creation .

" If f anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." (2 Thess 5:17)

As the Catechism teaches " Incorporated into Christ by Baptism, Christians are “dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” and so participate in the life of the Risen Lord."

This particular pastor put it this way. (I’m paraphrasing). Disciples of Christ are those who the Holy Spirit if God has brought about a change in heart from a heart of stone to a heart of flesh, made them a new creation in Christ, adopted them as Children of God and indwells them by His Holy Spirit.

I’d certainly go along with that .
 
Our Lord said anyone who hears the word of God and acts on them are my brothers, sisters, & my mother.

That’s a disciple.
