How do you do penance for the salvation of souls?

I think you could say some prayers, offering them up for the salvation of souls. As well, you could also get a Mass said for the salvation of souls.

You could also do alms, obtain indulgences and apply those merits to the dead, offer up your Holy Communion for Souls in Purgatory are just a few.

In general the ways are shown by the general grants for an indulgence:
  1. Raising the mind to God with humble trust while performing one’s duties and bearing life’s difficulties, and adding, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
  2. Devoting oneself or one’s goods compassionately in a spirit of faith to the service of one’s brothers and sisters in need.
  3. Freely abstaining in a spirit of penance from something licit and pleasant.
  4. Freely giving open witness to one’s faith before others in particular circumstances of everyday life.

And also by attaining an indulgence for the faithfully departed.

  3. Pray always in everything you do and think.
  4. Learn to recognize the penances that the Lord sends you.
 
I do it by the little sacrifices in daily life that I can offer up for the conversion of sinners.
 
For the folks suggesting prayers for the souls in Purgatory, while it is wonderful to pray for the souls in Purgatory, that is NOT praying “for the salvation of souls” as souls in Purgatory are already saved. They’re definitely going to Heaven eventually.

Praying for the salvation of souls means praying for living people here on earth, including those who are close to death but not dead yet. St. John Vianney said it was very important to pray for the salvation of the living. The living are NOT definitely saved yet and could still go to Hell.

You can say any prayer for living souls’ salvation that you want, or offer up any penance.

If you happen to get an indulgence for it, then you can give that indulgence to the souls in Purgatory while the living souls get the benefit of the prayers or other acts. I do this all the time. Prayers or communion for a living person, indulgence to the Holy Souls. Just tell God what you want and if it be his will he’ll apply your prayers the way you want.

This, and in addition, the Fatima sacrifice prayer:

Oh my Jesus, I offer this for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
 
I usually say 1 Pater 1 Ave Maria and 1 Gloria for them.
Also the Eternal Rest.
