How do you explain death and Heaven to children?

While I was putting my 4 year-old daughter to bed tonight she started crying and said that she doesn’t want to die and she doesn’t want to go to Heaven. I let her know that Heaven is a wonderful place and Jesus and Mary and all the angels and saints are there and it’s beautiful. She was still crying that she doesn’t want to go there, she wants to stay here with our family. I was scrambling for a resource on her bookshelf as we have some of my old kids Catholic books. I read pages from the Easter story which explained that Jesus died for us so that one day we can go to Heaven. And that if we are good, and follow Jesus and love like God loves that we can be with Jesus in Heaven.

I guess I just wasn’t ready to answer this question in a way that was comforting to her. Are there any explanations or resources that could be of help in explaining death and Heaven to children?
