How do you feel about straw man questions?

For example, someone might say that a wife might submit to their husband and then someone else will ask something like “So you think a woman shouldn’t make decisions on her own” or some overly extreme view. Really I don’t get why they put such an unrealistic and negative twist to what someone says.

Oh, so you think strawman questions are the best way to argue, huh?

Just kidding. But this is in casual I couldn’t resist.

It’s pretty lame, fallacious and stops real conversation in its tracks. I don’t answer them and try to move on. If that fails I give up unless the person is close to me.

Kim sure there many reasons, but I often see it in highly charged or emotional arguments where defeating another is more important than the discussion. It isn’t so much a negative twist as using statement Y to counter statement X.
