On my diocese’s webpage they have an Institute for Spiritual Direction, where they train people to be spiritual directors. It says they are:

trained to accompany another person on the spiritual journey, to help them uncover and discover the direction of God in their lives

is this the same as a mentor/sponsor? It looks a little more involved. How does one find such a person? Ask the parish office?

A spiritual director is basically your “coach” for your spiritual life. The person is there to help guide you to deepening your relationship with Christ and help you on your path to holiness. A priest once told me that as a spiritual director they are responsible to Christ for your soul. Although this person is typically a priest, not all spiritual directors are priests. Having a spiritual director that is a priest has the addition bonus of being able to hear your confession when you meet.

My best advice would be to ask your parish priest to help you find a spiritual director. He will know who is qualified to give spiritual direction, and if he knows you well, he may know someone who will be a good fit for you.

I think I got everything right. You can read more here:

All the best with your journey
