I feel like since I’ve graduated from school and don’t have the daily influences/introductions toward new subjects and material, my brain is kind of going flat. The amount I used to take in, discuss, ponder, every day is SO much more than what I do now. I feel I’m getting narrow-minded!

But it was easy with profs, etc., introducing and pointing me toward new things. True, I can read books and look things up, but I feel like I need more dialogue or discussion. Forums are awesome for that… but do you do anything special to keep challenging yourself?

I know exactly how you feel. I took a college algebra class last year, and didnt know how to solve the problems. The last time I used algebra was back in high school, that was almost 9 years ago. I totally forgot how to solve the equations.

Great question, His Ruby!

I’m currently taking a Latin class through our local adult school, and it has been a wonderful experience … some people get a “rush” from skydiving, and then there are the nerds like me, who get a rush from linguistics. 😃 Every week I walk out of that class full of energy! It’s been almost 15 years (gulp!) since I graduated from university, and this is the first class I’d taken since then. It has been such a blast! God willing, I intend to take take another class after this one finishes.

Is there any subject you especially enjoy? Music, languages, mathematics or accounting … ? Most medium-to-large cities will have an adult school full of interesting courses on many topics. Our class meets on the campus of a local high school. Try searching online, or perhaps contacting the local school district … they can probably point you in the direction of local adult classes. Also, if you have a college or university in your city, they will often allow you to “audit” the class (for no credit, but for a much lower fee … or in some cases, at no charge).

I hope you’ll soon find something challenging and enjoyable! 🙂

This is a really good idea. I suppose I hadn’t considered it because I’m afraid of costs… but I, too, get my “rush” from learning in various subjects.

I live in a small town, but a few nearby cities aren’t too far and are large enough to have something like this, I think. Now I’m going to go research. 👍 😃 Thanks.

as a full time grad student i think im good for now. this has given me a bit to think about though, coutinuing education things seem like theyll be a good start, bu i think i’ll also try to keep getting diplomates and new certifications after graduation…that or just let myself go, i havent decided yet.

Participating in Forums, Bible Study and working out what are the best value products to buy at my local supermarket, and whether the fruit and veg have had the sun shining down on them depending on where they have come from in the world!!! I love keeping up with current affairs, taking part in debates and working out solutions to any problems I come across in my daily life. I hate misery and suffering around me. Listening to music is great for the brain too, especially classical, and a very pleasurable way to exercise the brain, as is singing although i’m not sure what my neighbours would say 😃

Free-form outdoor exercise, Mensa puzzle books and others of similar difficulty and personality, looking at optical illusion pictures, posting, reading good books, arts, cultivating friendships with people with different views, apologetics. Cats are good brain stimulators too. So are kids, but they need to be stimulated first before they can provide brain stimulation in return.
Sleep enough.
