How do you know if you have committed the sin of sloth?

Thanks,

God Bless.
Sloth is one of the seven deadly sins. These sins are different than acts of sin. These sins are rather the core motivations in your heart that lead to acts of sin. It can be helpful to know this because acts of sin aren’t always as clear cut as asking yourself “Did I do this particular behavior.” Honestly, I got to the point where those little confession guides at my parish were simply not helpful. I knew I had sinned, but if I went through that list, my answer was “no” to all the particular sins mentioned. Since then I have focused far more on the seven deadly sins. I ask myself “How have I given into sloth?” “How has my pride expressed itself?”

It makes for very interesting confessions because you end up confessing things that outwardly would not appear sinful.

Sloth is basically laziness. It is a tendency to not make your day a worthy offering to God. It is the tendency to take on chores begrudgingly, to put minimal effort into our daily labors, to rest more than we need to rest, to overindulge in recreation. Spending too much time on CAF could be an expression of sloth.

The dishes are piled up in the sink; your socks stink; the lawn needs mowing; the car ran out of fuel three miles away last month; your wife has left you; the neighbours shun you; your boss called you slack and a whole lot of other stuff like that.

I’m just posting here because I’m on 666 posts right now, and this ups the count to 667.

Thanks all! Carry on! 😃 Phew!

:rotfl:

Well I wandered in here, so I might as well contribute something. I’ve often been accused of laziness, mostly because of ADD, which I have. From my parents to my wife, they have been forever saying things like “Why didn’t you do (such and such). I told you last week!” I’d say “But I don’t remember!” and I’d usually get back “You just don’t WANT to remember!” That’s not sloth.

The easiest way to gauge for sloth (in my view) especially when doing an examination of conscience for Confession, is to think of all those things that I KNOW I blew off for something else. Sloth isn’t being “too tired” to do something because we all get tired, but sloth can also be not intervening in a situation where you know you could help, but you just “don’t want to be bothered.” Whenever you say that to yourself, 19 times out of 20 you’ve commited the sin of sloth.

At least that’s me.

Yeah, sloth is the one sin that I am the most attached to. A lot of other sins if I want to give into them my mind will start playing mental trinks on me to rationalize them. But with sloth I seem to be at this level of wanting to change, becoming overwhelmed with it and mostly just mentally beating myself up for it because “Gosh darn it, why can’t you just control yourself.” Its the sin where I just start thinking “Maybe if I admonished myself enough I’d overcome this sin.”

But I think it definitely is complicated because of my ADD.

😦

Wait a minute, I get annoyed when I get told to do something by my parents, including today. Does that mean it is mortal sin?

Sloth is when you put off cleaning your house because you’re hanging out on CAF. :o

I doubt it.

My daughter is going out for breakfast with my sister and my sister’s friend (a college student), who is going to give her some career advice.

I heard her going to the bathroom and I asked her what time she has to be there and she sounded so annoyed, I had to tell her a few things.

If you always get annoyed, you can certainly pray to God that he will help you to appreciate your parents more and overlook any “annoying” things that they do.

Ha ha. I should be cleaning house right now. But this is more fun.

As a side note: I once confessed this sin to a priest and he didn’t know what I was talking about. I had to define sloth for him. (Or maybe I was pronouncing it wrong? Long O as opposed to short O??) I guess the term isn’t used too much anymore…

Spiritual sloth.
I would think the sin would be more of spiritual sloth than actual laziness. Spiritual sloth would be not saying your prayers, not going to mass, not doing any spiritual disiplines. That is how I see it.

I’m not sure I buy into the notion that productive people are guilty of sloth. We all get tired, and we all want to rest when we’re done working.

I think those people who are not productive in any way are guilty of sloth, but not those who are full time students and/or working part time or full time. There’s a time to work and there’s a time to rest. It’s totally different when a student has a sink full of dishes, dog hair everywhere, something turning blue in a glass on the table, etc., versus someone playing video games until they develop blood clots in their legs (did anyone see that 1,000 ways to die episode about the gamer who killed himself playing video games all day?)

I dunno. I talked to my doctor about not wanting to do anything on my days off, most particularly after working three or four days in a row. I put in very long hours on my feet running about all day, and doing lots of overtime that personally don’t think is worth the extra cash. And the next day, I do bare minimum. I mean, it’s even hard for me to do the bare minimum, even if I actually like doing the bare miniumum and procrastinate doing the things that I have to do, but that I also enjoy doing 😦 I thought I was getting depressed, which of course, makes people want to just do nothing all day. And maybe it is, with the days being shorter and it being darker longer. But my doctor said that those in my field all say the same thing to her.

Of course, I am most productive on my days at work, and my most productive days at home are the day before I work. No one can accuse me of sloth on those days 😃

I definitely need at least one day to just do nothing but bare minimum. 🤷

This was very helpful-wonderful explanation 👍

I know I suffer from this-any other reading material that may be useful is appreciated

AND you have the time to worry incessantly about dirty thoughts crowding into your head, because you are not preoccupied with better things.
